Genetically Modified Organisms

The first thing I think of when I hear genetically modified organisms if food. Corporations have started
genetically modifying all sorts of things, but the food part is what scares me most. I can see the benefit
as the genetically modified organisms add quantity to the food already being produced. They also allow
for faster growth and some say better taste. The down side of this is Potential human health impacts,
including allergens, transfer of antibiotic resistance markers, unknown effects Potential environmental
impacts, including: unintended transfer of transgenes through cross-pollination, unknown effects on
other organisms (e.g., soil microbes), and loss of flora and fauna biodiversity (U.S. Department of
Energy, 2008). Corn for example is used in everything and is produced at an enormous rate and it is
produced at this rate by using genetically modified organisms. The corn is broken down into just about
every product you can think of. The Ethics of this is also something that should be though about. I have
a hard time believing that eating all this genetically modified food is good for us. I personally eat only
local grow organic food for this very reason.
