Course Description & Objectives

Course Title: Issues in Secondary Education

Course Description: This in an undergraduate 200 level course that focuses on the social, economic, and political forces that influence the development, organization, and purposes of secondary schools. Course Objectives: This course has been designed so that all secondary education teacher candidates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: 1. Teacher professionalism as it is articulated in Illinois Professional Teaching Standards and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. 2. The present structure, organization, and effectiveness of secondary schools via clinical experiences, class participation, reflection and application. 3. Terms and issues related to student diversity such as students with special needs, English Language Learners, including legal and safety issues and requisite instructional accommodations. 4. Multicultural concerns and critical issues related to cultural diversity in American society and schools. 5. The relationship between standards and curriculum in today s schools including the role of Illinois Learning Standards and the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards.
