EUCLID ABOUT FAMILY Euclid most likely came from a rich family, because as a young child, he went to Plato's

school in ancient Greece, where only the rich were educated. ABOUT EDUCATION There is little known about his early life but his education was in geometry. He was educated at Plato's Academy where he stayed until he was invited to teach b y Ptolemy I at his newly founded university. ACHIEVEMENTS Euclid is best known for his treatise on mathematics, The Elements. His book is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching math, especially geometry, from the time of its publi cation until the late 19th or early 20th century. The Elements is a mathematical and geometric treatise consisting of 13 books written in Alexandria at around 3 00 BC. It is divided into thirteen books which cover plane geometry, arithmetic and number theory, irrational numbers, and solid geometry, such as definitions, propositions, theorems, constructions, the five postulates (axioms), and mathema tical proofs of the propositions. FAMOUS FOR His fame stems from the set of 13 books on geometry that he compiled called "El ements," which set forth the principles of what is now known as Euclidian geomet ry. Euclid's work was so complete that "Elements" was used as a text for more th an 2,000 years.Nonetheless, for his contribution to mathematics, Euclid has been called the "father of geometry." died about 265 BC
