5-year tea export strategy likely to cost 125 crore

Kolkata: The final streamlining of the fivefold strategy for tea exports would be presented before the ministry by the first week of April.During implementation it is expected to entail a cost of Rs 125 crore. By the end of this year we will be able to start implementing the policy once the funds are in place.A lot of preparedness is required to implement the policy, Roshni Sen,deputy chairperson,Tea Board said. The central government is planning to focus on five specific export markets for the coming five years for tea exports as the markets in those countries have shown huge growth potential. As Union minister of state for commerce & industry Jyotiraditya Scindia termed it as a triple five strategy,this policy would focus on five countries the US,Russia,Kazakhstan,Egypt and Iran to maximize its tea consumption potential in next five years.It would be implemented through public,private partnership model.Sen said around 75% of the project money would be provided by the government and rest by the industry players.Total production of the country in 2010 was 966 million kgs,of which 193 million kgs were exported.The project management groups would meet soon to decide on the detailing of the project implementations and funds, Monojit Dasgupta,secretary general,Indian Tea Association said.
