and much more personalized. Brides today are not afraid of
incorporating colors and carrying out their selected theme
throughout all the details of the wedding, from the design of the
cake, to the little details of the stationary displays and even down

very popular this summer. The look is done with

that is perfect for a summer wedding.
Anna Tran of Mommy Dearest: Bridesmaids dresses vary in style
and are very dependent on the theme of the wedding. For an
outdoor wedding, brides tend to select dresses that are made out
of light and airy material such as sheer chifon. The one defnite
trend that we are seeing is more brides are selecting dresses that
are versatile and wearable. Therefore, allowing their bridesmaids
to wear the dress again for diferent occasions.

brides choosing wedding gowns that have a vintage fair to the

he long, fowing lines of the maxi
skirt have been around for time
immortal, or at least since the
days of Woodstock. But this time around,
stay away from anything slightly prairie
looking. Instead, go for something more
sophisticated, even a little sexy. In this
ensemble, the fowing white maxi beauti-

son from Jodie Fosters character in
the 1970s flm Taxi Driver. Key ele-
ments include large hats and high wedges,
with any combination of tops and bottoms.
This particular look is picnic-perfect with
high-waisted navy shorts cinched with a
tan stretch belt. A striped tank is fun and
light and can easily be topped with a cardi-
gan or summer scarf. The large straw hat

so easy to incorporate in any outft. If youre not ready for
an all-out coral dress, then just try it on the lower half. These fat-

Taking cues from the states naturally beautiful backdrop,
the Texas collection features warm tones from honey and
tangerine to dazzling hues of violet and sky blue, said Suzi
Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director.
Six of the shades (Guy Meets Gal-veston, Yall Come Back Ya Hear?,

and Houston We Have a Purple) have a semi-transparent nish that
OPI is calling sorbet. (We call it a jelly nish.) Weiss-Fischmann
said OPI is placing bets that this new sorbet nish will be all
the rage in 2012. Unlike thicker creams or light sheers, these twelve shades
are slightly translucent, similar to the look of icy, water-based sorbet, said
Weiss-Fischmann.

start with the basics then
add hot-right-now colors
and fabrics to keep them

a complete overhaul each
season. You can dress
them up, dress them
down, bling them out or keep them simple.
Whether you go for ready-made window treatments, in-
dulge in custom designs or get creative with a combination of
the two, the key to lightening up for summer is starting with
neutrals as a foundation, then adding cool, trendy colors and
subtracting heavy layers. In other words, theres no need to
spend hundreds of dollars or more on completely new window
treatments every time the temperatures dip or soar.
There are certain elements of your window treatments that
you wont want to change with the seasons because of the cost
and pain-in-the-butt factor the main panels and valance, for
example. Build them around neutrals like grays, whites, tans,
etc. Even darker colors like chocolate can act as a neutral,
depending on a homes overall theme, according to Latisha
Sodolak from Nickolinas in Beaumont.
Foundation fabrics should be substantial enough to take
you through winter, but bear in mind that the really heavy
ones will be harder to dress down when warmer weather rolls
around.
Once youve got your base set, you can add splashes of the
trendiest colors with sashes, panels, etc. Whats hot for sum-
mer 2011? That depends on whom you ask.
Light and neu, with a hint of blue, said Jeremy Schmitt
from McManus Co. in Beaumont. Neu, for neutral in shades
of grey, white and pale tan or brown. Then add a little sky
blue, and you have a chic and soft color palette keeping you en
vogue for summer 11.
Sodolak says its all about orange this year. But dont worry,
were not talking Tang.
The hot color for this summer is orange, without a
doubt, she said. But not bright orange, more of a coral-y
color. For so long, red was the hot color; this tones that down
and lightens it up.

now is shabby AND chic, which is a little diferent
from the popular tattered, rustic look known as shabby
chic. To stay on the cutting edge of window fashion
lan, go for a tailored outer layer alongside a looser, lighter
inner layer, such as simple silk panels on either side of the
window framing free-owing linen sheers underneath.
Something else you might consider adding is a geometric
band or border to just the inner edge of the silk drapery panels,
running vertically, he said. This is a great way to customize
your drapes to your own personal taste.

the lighter inner panels provide privacy while letting in the sunshine. If
you have shades, she said, pull them up as high as they can go so theyre
hidden behind the valance.
Or you can opt for modern, more versatile shades that dont have to
hide. Joyce Thompson, owner of The Blind Factory in Beaumont, said
there are a variety of pretty fabric and even woven wood shades that are
transparent enough to let in light but still allow for privacy and heat ab-
sorption. Cellular shades, she added, are number-rated for their energy
efciency.
Some other ideas:
Blackout linings for draperies, available in a variety of colors
and design options, help keep heat and harmful UV rays out and
are especially helpful when youre away on vacation or have to
keep the curtains closed for any length of time.
Blinds (whether cool wood or traditional vinyl) and louvered
wooden shutters can keep the light out completely or can be
opened to let in as much or as little brightness as your want.
Many have slats so thin that they practically disappear
with opened.
The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to window treat-
ments at any time of year is that you have choices, and they can be
as elaborate or simple, costly or inexpensive as you want. Even stores
that specialize in custom treatments will help you add ready-made
options to your window repertoire.
Just dont be afraid to try something new, Sodolak said.
You dont have to start from scratch every time. You can
swap items in and out, play with colors, or just put up a
whole ready-made treatment if you really do want a to-
tally diferent look. Changing your windows for the sea-
son or just because you feel like you need a break from
what you have doesnt need to be a major project.

toilet, a marvel of
both engineering
and conspicuous
consumption or in
this case, conspicu-
ous elimination.
This is no mere utilitarian
commode. This is voidance
elevated to art.
It warms you. It cleanses you.
It plays music for you, because
from what I gather from the pro-
motional materials, youre going
to want to settle in and stay
awhile. Just working through the
remote-control options ought to
take you through about half of
Dark Side of the Moon.
And it can be yours for just

The Numi doesnt even look
like a toilet. It has a squarish,
sophisticated shape thats better-
looking than anything in my
house.

use it are better-looking than
anything in my house, too. At
least thats the impression I
got from the Numi website,

Its a sensual site lled with
pictures of a beautiful couple
locked in sultry gazes over their
toilet. The Numi is situated in
a glass-walled room overlook-
ing a breathtaking vista of hills
ringing a city, giving hundreds of
people an unobstructed view of
this couples loo.
The room is decorated in
tasteful restraint with a oor
lamp and an accent table, but ev-
idently no place to sit other than
the john. As my Facebook friend
Linda noted when I posted one
of the pictures on my page,
Poor family spent so much on
the house and toilet they cant
aford furniture or curtains.
Its what the Numi does,
however, that really commanded
my attention. It senses your
presence and opens the lid
so youre good to go, so
to speak. It warms the
seat to the temperature
you choose. Its built-in,
retractable bidet wand
(doesnt that sound magi-
cal?) sprays you clean with
your choice of pulsating,
oscillating or wave actions.
Just watching the bidet
enactment, I had to fan
myself.
So now my own toilet
is seeming a little, well,
puritanical. Never mind
that it has functioned just
ne for a dozen years or
so. Does it serenade me?
No. Does it heat my feet
on a cold winter day? No.
Does it know me better
than my own husband?
Denitely not.
I want the Numi.
And if I get it, I
promise to enclose it

Whether humble or palatial,
theres no place like a safe home
H
ome is a place where we should feel
safe and secure. After a hard days
work, a long trip or just a hectic
afternoon of running errands, were
glad to be home where we can relax.
Our homes are our sanctuaries, and
the thought of intruders breaking in
is not pleasant. Summer is a popular
time for burglars to take advantage of
the traditional vacation months. Your
home is your castle, so make it as fortress-like as possible.
Home Security Technology
Wireless and hardwired home security systems, home automation
devices, digital door locks, camera surveillance systems and tracking
devices are all available to the homeowner who wants to be super
safe.
With home security systems, Wayne Duerler, vice president and
co-owner of Advanced Systems Alarm Services, prefers hardwired.
Im old school, he said. I would prefer a hardwired system. The
reason: Its a positive circuit with a constant connection between
the control panel and the security devices in the house, so theres no
chance of interference from other wireless devices. If we can get a
wire to it, we want to, he said.
But what about common-sense burglary prevention such as keep-
ing your doors and windows locked and your house well-lit? Isnt
that enough for most homes? Yeah, until you get robbed the rst
time, said Mark Gunstream, president and co-owner of Advanced
Systems Alarm Services. You dont think you need a security sys-
tem until you get hit.
Home Security Systems: A basic system includes a control panel,
a keypad for arming and disarming the system, a siren, an
inside motion detector, door and window contacts and a central
monitoring station. There is a fee for installation and a monthly
fee for the monitoring service. For an added cost, you can get
more safety items including surveillance cameras, panic buttons,
smoke and gas detectors and pressure-sensitive mats that will
trigger the alarm.
Home Automation: By attaching wireless devices to various
household items such as lights, window blinds, locks, thermo
stats and televisions, you can control them by a remote control
device in your home or by a cell phone or computer when
youre away.
Keyless Doors: Losing your house keys in not an issue if you
have digital door locks that open with your combination.
Wireless Protection Devices: Attach the device to a valuable
item. If the item is moved, an alarm is triggered.
GPS Tracking: This system can be used on vehicles to keep track
of family members or employees. It can also be used in the form
of a wristwatch to nd Alzheimers disease patients who might
wander away from home.
Burglary Prevention Basics
Dont let criminals ruin your summer fun, said Carol Riley, a
public information ofcer with the Beaumont Police Department.
Take the necessary precautions to keep your home secure. Some
common-sense approaches can keep burglars at bay.
Keep your doors and windows locked.
Keep some lights on when you leave,
and use timers on them if you are leaving
for several days.
Keep your garage door closed.
When youre on vacation, ask a friend or
neighbor to pick up
your papers and mail.
Dont let the grass get overgrown when
youre gone. Hire some one to keep it cut.
Deadbolts should be on all exterior doors.
Add locks specically for sliding glass
doors and French doors to make them
more secure.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Dont make it easy for a thief to steal your
stuf. Put identifying marks, such as your
drivers license number or initials, on your
property in case it is stolen. Many times sto-
len property is recovered, but detectives cant
make a case because there are no identifying
marks to prove ownership, Riley said.
Keep your lawn mower and other lawn
equipment, bicycles and grills out of sight.
Keep your garage door closed and your garden shed locked.
Put curtains or blinds on the windows of your garage so thieves
cant see in.
Dont leave valuable items in your car or pickup-truck bed.
Safe Outside
A brightly lit yard and manicured lawn are attractive and help
keep burglars away. A small no soliciting sign by your doorbell can
also help get your message across to potential thieves. Avoid dealing
with door-to-door solicitors, Riley said. Burglars use soliciting
scams to pick out future targets.
Light up your yard with exterior lighting. Motion-activated
lights are recommended for backyards.
Trim your trees and bushes, especially near windows, that can
be used as a hiding place for intruders.
Make sure your door hinges are on the inside, not the outside
where a burglar can easily remove the door.
Look out the peep hole in your door or a window if someone
knocks unexpectedly. If its a stranger, dont answer the door.
Pay attention to your surroundings, Riley advised. Stay
vigilant. Duerler, a former law enforcement ofcer who currently
serves in the U.S. Navy Reserve, has his own advice: If you think
like a victim, youll be a victim. Think two steps ahead of the situa-

Zummo meat company fre-
quently cooks sausages on a
gas grill when entertaining, but
also recommends a smoker for
different favor, depending on
the wood chips used. We use
hickory, he said. a lot of people
use mesquite or pecan. With
smoking, you dont have to sit
there and watch it and turn it and
worry about overheating.

sausage is already fully-cooked,
so put it on medium rather than
high, he advised. Dont be in
a hurry. Relax and enjoy your

biting into a link that is tough,
according to James Ware, a Port
Neches resident. the whole
key is to soften links up before
you cook them. thats why I boil
them.

tion ritual for when he is hosting
dinner. Before the sausages ever
hit the grill, he boils them for two
hours or more to remove the
grease and soften the casings.
I would never do all this for four
people but when Im having a big
group, its well worth it.
one surprise to Wares pro-
cess is the addition of Dr Pepper
soda to the boiling water. Ware
isnt sure where he learned this
piece of cooking folklore or if
the addition actually does what
people say, but he uses it faith-
fully all the same. Someone said
the soda sweetened the sau-
sage, some said the carbonation
helped separate the grease, he
said.

Ware of Port Neches, enjoy a
running contest of who can cook
the best sausage. Ware con-
cedes that, at least in appear-
ance, his father has the upper
hand. he likes to slow grill them,
constantly rolling, Ware said.

Slice ingredients and alternate vegetable, boudain and
sausage onto skewers. Season to taste. Grill on the pit.
Turn occasionally until vegetables are fully cooked.
the most frequent mistake grilling sausage or boudain is
getting the meat too hot too quickly, causing the casing to
burst.
1. turn the grill on high for 5 minutes.
2. Reduce heat to medium, spray cooking area with a
non-stick cooking spray to avoid food sticking to the grill.
3. allow 2-3 minutes on each side of the sausage or boudain.
Slow cooking will give the meat the chance to heat to the
center without bursting the casing.
1. Bring a pot of water to a boil.
2. add a liter of Dr Pepper or coke, return to boil.
3. Punch holes in the sausage skins with a fork.
4. add sausages to water mixture, then reduce heat for slow
boil for an hour.
5. Remove from heat and pour water out, repeat process for
another hour.
6. Remove from heat, remove sausages and cook on the grill.
(alternatively, place in a crock-Pot with barbecue sauce of
choice and slow cook.)
Steve Zummo noted that though the inside of Zummo Boudain
is fully-cooked, the outside casing is not. For some recipes,
the casing can be removed and the boudain warmed to taste.
however, for grilling, cook on medium heat turning occasionally
to thoroughly cook and heat the boudain. the casing should be
crisp when done.
opened in 1908, the Zummo meat co. has been a family
business for 103 years. Steve Zummo and his brother Ryan
represent the fourth generation working in the business. the
brothers work alongside their father Frank, who is the ceo, and
other cousins and relatives. the business has been in the same
location in Beaumont for 70 years, though many dramatic updates
have been made. the company often donates meat products to
the community, as it did in the aftermath of hurricanes Rita and
Ike. the family sausage recipe is a closely held secret. as Steve
Zummo said, Its been around a heck of a lot longer than I have.

4 large Boneless Chicken Breasts
4 Slices of Zummo Smoked Bacon
3/4 c. Wish-Bone Italian Dressing
Toothpicks
Season chicken breast. Cut open and place stick of boudain
(with casing removed) into chicken breast. Roll breast up,
wrapping a slice of bacon around each breast. Keep closed
with toothpick. Marinate the stuffed breasts in dressing for about
3 hours in the refrigerator. Set grill to medium heat. Discard
marinade and place breast onto grill. Grill covered for about 15
minutes turning occasionally.

Blanch peppers in water till soft. Drain on paper towels.
Dice sausage links. Remove boudain from casing and mix
with diced sausage. Fill each pepper with boudain and

huge corner lot in
Beaumonts Old
Town is a hidden
garden filled with
sculptures some
whimsical and
some serious.
Theres a girl
reading a book
on a fish in one spot while pallbearers
carry a coffin in another. Happy children,
loving families and playful animals are
depicted all around the grounds. Its the
private outdoor gallery of David Cargill,
a nationally known sculptor whose works
grace many public places in the region.
My tendency is to do things that are
lighthearted, the sculptor, wearing his
standard uniform of bib overalls, said. Most
of his commissioned sculptures had serious
themes, so when he created pieces for him-
self, they were often fanciful. His art doesnt
need to have a message, he explained. In
school, students were taught that art should
have content, he said. We got past that.
The fgures in his backyard are mostly
bronze, but some are terra-cotta. Im in
my wood period now, he said, noting that
Hurricane Rita wrecked his kiln for making
bronze sculptures and downed several of his
trees, providing him with lots of material.
A work still in progress
In 1957, Cargill started building his
sprawling home that includes his indoor
gallery and studio. When was it fnished?
I dont have a completion date, he replied
with a hint of a grin as he headed inside
with his black standard poodle, Jack, trot-
ting behind. A back door leads to a room
with foor-to-ceiling bookshelves on one
side and windows opening out onto the
sculpture garden on the other side. Next to
the windows, the dining table is set for tea.
Beyond is the gallery with its high arched
ceiling that holds Cargills smaller sculp-
tures and his wifes paintings.
He and Patty Cargill met when they were
attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was studying industrial design and she
was pursuing an art degree. Patty is the
better of the two of us, he said, referring to
his wifes artistic talent.
On the opposite side of the house from
the gallery is the sculptors cluttered studio.
Shelves lining the high walls are packed
with cans of paint, tools and other art sup-
plies. Rough-cut chunks of tree trunks rest
heavily on the foor with one being trans-
formed into a table. Two unfnished clay
busts seemingly stare at visitors. With every
shelf, table and much of the foor covered
with the detritus of his work, an ancient-
looking ironing board serves as another
surface to store more odds and ends.
My whole life is confused between
building the house and the studio work, he
said. Intertwined, perhaps? No, he said,
shaking his head. Confused.
The best ones just happen
Practically his whole life has been de-
voted to his art and, at 82, hes still creating
and showing it. The Dishman Art Museum
at Lamar University is currently hosting an
exhibit of David and Patty Cargills work.

ages, said Jes-
sica Dandona, the
museums director.
The Dishman Art
Museum is honored to
show the work of two
artists who have done so
much to support the arts in
Beaumont and who have had
such an impact on their local
community.
The university is home to one of
Cargills better-known pieces, the larg-
er-than-life bust of Mirabeau B. Lamar.
Why did the artist make the bronze
sculpture so big? I thought it should
be something that would be seen,
he explained simply. The humongous
head rests on a marble base inscribed
with some quotes by the universitys
namesake. The words were etched by
Patty Cargill.
What inspired him to create his
lighthearted pieces? The best ones
just happened, he mused. I have
no idea. He gave the example of the
sculpture of a girl reading a book on
a sh. I dont know what possessed
me, he said.
Even though Cargill might not
know what inspires him, others credit
him and his wife as their inspiration,
including internationally known pho-
tographer Keith Carter. I think the
Cargills are the true aristocrats of our
town if the requirements are charac-
ter, originality, intelligence and sheer
beauty of spirit, Carter, a longtime
Beaumont resident, said. Ive known
them for over half a century now, and
Ive been grateful for every day in their
company. Theyre a major reason I
wanted to be an artist.
No reason to stop
-Looking back on his career, Cargill
notes one high point. Some of his
pieces were in a show in Dallas in the
1980s, and Dallas-based real estate
developer Trammell Crow bought his
sculpture titled Horse and Rider.
When Crow came to Beaumont to
speak at a civic event, Cargill attended
and was introduced to Crow before the
real estate magnate spoke to the audi-
ence. At the podium, Crow pointed at
Cargill and said, You know the best
thing in Beaumont is this young fellow
right here. After that, Crow commis-
sioned Cargill to create pieces for his
personal collection.
After all these years, what motivates
Cargill to keep sculpting? Is it habit,
or is it a necessary part of his life, like
breathing? Maybe, he contemplated.
But the answer is really much simpler.
I just like making stuf.
His family claims hell die on his
chisel. I dont plan to ever stop, he
said. I enjoy this work. His wife in-
terjected, Theres no reason to stop.
He nodded, agreeing, as he poured her
more tea. Im happy to just be doing
what Im doing. VIP

charcoal sketches and oil paintings produced between
1950 and 2011 by the Beaumont artists.

forward to all these things
and more, except for one little
element the humidity. As I
write this, we are experiencing
one of the most pleasant
springs in memory, but I know
that by the time this goes into
print Ill feel like Im stepping
into a sauna every time I leave
the house. Well, they do say it
keeps your skin looking young.
So with that singular benefit in
mind, Im here to tell you how
to fight the other effects of our
swampy climate: the melt your
face off, my makeup looked fine
two hours ago, dang this dang
humidity effects, to be exact.
Now, Im a Beaumont girl
myself, and I know how we
Southern ladies are about our
makeup. Weve got to have it!
This may be true, but I also
believe people should notice
you and not your makeup. And
thats easier said than done
when your eyeliner is running
down your cheeks and your
lipgloss has migrated to your
chin. So whats a girl to do when
its 95 degrees Fahrenheit with
106% humidity? Just remem-
ber the little saying less is
more. Put away that bottle of
cakey foundation and hide your
chunky black eyeliner until
next season.
Summer is the time to let
beautiful skin show. Instead of
liquid foundation, try a powder.
For the lightest coverage use a
loose powder like the one from
Coty. Yes, thats your grand-
mothers makeup but it does the
job of absorbing oil and evening
out skin tone. For a little more
coverage, try Studio Fix from
MAC, a powder foundation that
comes in a broad range of tones.
Apply either of these with a
ufy brush for the smoothest
nish. For a little more cover-
age, try dabbing concealer on
trouble spots with a foundation
brush and feathering out the
edges, then powdering on top.
To achieve that sun-kissed
look, reach for the bronzer.
Avoid looking like a pumpkin
by using a fan brush with a light
touch and apply in a C from
the temple onto the cheeks. You
could stop right there, but if
youre a blush addict like me,
youll surely want a pop of color.
A bright salmon pink looks good
on virtually every skin tone, but
all you need is a little bit on the
apples of the cheeks. Just stick
with the powder blush and stay
away from creams to maximize
the humidity-ghting factor.
If youre in a natural mood,
curl the lashes, add several coats
of mascara and call it a day. Just
make sure your mascara is wa-
terproof. Im continually search-
ing for the perfect waterproof
mascara, so if you have one you
cant live without, please let me
in on the secret. As I always say,
lashes are a girls best friend.
If you want to step it up a
notch, draw attention to your
baby blues or browns with a
bright eyeshadow. Try lime
green, turquoise blue or bright
purple. Were not going for 80s
Tammy Fay here just add a
swipe of color to the lid, next
to the lashes. To prevent the
dreaded eyeshadow creasies,
start of with a good eyeshadow
base. My faves include one from
LOreal and the Paint Pot from
MAC. I actually went swimming
at a party one summer with a
full eyeshadow look, and Ill be
darned if that eyeshadow didnt
budge, thanks to my Paint Pot.
And last but not least, the
lips. If youre doing up your
eyes, all you need is a touch
of sheer gloss on the lips. But
when you keep the eyes simple,
you can play up that pucker.
Again, go for some color. Red
is nice, but think tropical
instead. I love hibiscus pink or
bright coral lips this summer.
And instead of lipstick, go for
the matte look with a smooth
lipliner. Line the lips, ll in
completely and voila bold
summer lips that stay for days.
Well, at least until you eat your
next meal.

ing natural and staying where
it belongs, try a setting spray.
Theres several to choose from
at ULTA, or you can pick up my
favorite, MAC Fix +. A couple
spritzes keeps the skin looking
healthy and helps your makeup
stay on longer. Now you can say
