The Honorable Arien Specter Chairman Subcommittee on Labor, HHS and Education Senate Appropriations Cornmittee 184 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Mr. Chairman: I am writing to request that the Fiscal Year 2000 Labor, HHS and Education Appropriations bill include $1 million for the Save A Life Foundation (SALF) in Chicago, Illinois. The SALF has been influential in training children to save the lives of others. This organization has trained 35,000 Cook County children since October, 1998, with the assistance of 150 firefighters, paramedics, and police officers as their instructors. Through "on sight" instruction, the SALF has been able to utilize the talents of research and rescue teams, police officers, firefighters and others, by coming into a classroom and teaching.children the fundamentals and techniques. Furthermore, the SALF has also been instrumental in helping children better understand the practice of saving lives of other children. The SALF has fostered a solid working relationship with the Regional Organ Bank of Illinois and the Secretary of State's office in order to develop a statewide campaign based on the principal that "life saving skills saves lives." Thank you in advance for your consideration of this important request. Sincerely,

Richard J. Durbin U.S. Senator
