This article proposes five categories of auditory performance to describe different levels of hearing ability: (1) Unable to detect speech, (2) Aware of environmental sounds but unable to understand speech, (3) Understands speech at a loud volume but unable to follow conversation, (4) Understands conversation with a hearing aid but has difficulty without one, (5) Normal hearing ability with or without a hearing aid.
