2011 Call for Proposals


The Alabama Poverty Project invites college and university faculty members, administrators, and students from our Higher Education Alliance members and their community partners to submit presentation proposals for the 2011 Lifetime of Learning Summit. The following will find active participation in this conference to be particularly beneficial: Faculty members who incorporate poverty, disaster response, or community-university partnerships into their teaching and research; Administrators of campus offices of community involvement, service-learning, and enrollment management; Representatives of community agencies participating in service-learning courses or university partnerships; and Students with experience in poverty studies, disaster response, or university partnerships. Proposals should describe research, teaching, or curricular/co-curricular service initiatives that inform, initiate, improve, or sustain poverty elimination or community resilience activities. Presentations will be made during 50-minute breakout sessions. The presentation proposals should address one or more of the conference themes, which are: Poverty Research and Scholarship Basic and applied research on the causes and consequences of poverty and social inequality in the United States; particular preference will be given to those proposals that highlight poverty and inequality in Alabama. Tornado Response Creative implementation of tornado response activities that encourage sustained engagement by faculty, staff, and student volunteers. Community-University Partnerships Best practices in developing and sustaining collaborative community-university partnerships dedicated to building and maintaining resilience in low-income communities and encouraging community-driven social change. The proposal should be clear and concise and must include the following: A session title that accurately reflects your session content; A brief session description to be printed in the program (75-100 words); A detailed workshop description (500-word maximum); A brief biography in paragraph form for each presenter to be printed in the program (150-word maximum); Contact information for each presenter, including name, title, address, phone number, and email address; and AV needs for your presentation. In your proposal description, you should: Discuss the content that you will address and how it relates to the conference theme; Indicate the learning objectives for your presentation; and Describe the strategies you will use to engage participants in discussing, analyzing, synthesizing, and applying the information you will share. Proposals are due by August 8, 2011, and should be submitted in PDF form to the APP Office via email. There is a peer-reviewed process for acceptance, and potential presenters will be informed of decisions by August 21. Institutional members must be current on their dues.
