WRITING SKILLS: Giving opinions

Samples: Use I think (that) to express an opinion. I guess (that) is more informal. You can also use If you ask me.. to introduce an opinion. I think that its time to expand. If you ask me, the conference was a waste of time. You can also use the following expressions to give opinions: In my opinion / view To my mind/ my way of thinking From my point of view, As I see it In my view, we need to improve our public image. As I see it, we can cut production costs. Use According to + person to give another persons opinion. According to the press/ the Economist, share prices are going to fall.
Simple vs continuous

I think (that) in the present simple means I believe Im thinking of + -ing in the present continuous means I have the idea
Negative forms

Its more common to make the thinking verb negative to express a negative opinion. e.g. I dont think its a good idea ( I think its not a good ideal) We think that we can do business with this company Were thinking of doing business with this company. (= a possible plan) Strength of opinions. To express an opinion in a strong way, use : Theres no question / doubt /that) Its obvious / clear (that) I would think / say (that) Theres no doubt that this is a great opportunity. Id say that we could negotiate a better deal. You can introduce an opinion with of course or obviously when you expect agreement. Do not overuse it, it would sound arrogant!

You can use As far as Im concerned when your opinion is different from other peoples. As far as were concerned, the costs are not negotiable. Neutral opinions. I dont mind / I dont mind what we do. Im easy ( informal) When you want to make your opinion sound impartial use: it seems, its clear, its likely, its evident It seems that sales will decrease in the first quarter of next year.
