The Evesham K-8 School Dis-
trict and the Lenape Regional
High School District received
some unexpected news last week,
as Gov. Christie announced mil-
lions more in school state aid for
all districts in the state for the
2012 fiscal year budget.
The Christie administration
announced last week the alloca-
tion plans for $850 million in new
aid authorized for New Jersey
schools in the fiscal year 2012
budget. This includes the initial
$250 million increase for all
school districts, as well as an ad-
ditional $450 million for the Ab-
bott districts, and an additional
$150 million for non-Abbott dis-
tricts.
This year, New Jersey in-
creased state aid to school dis-
tricts by $850 million over last
year, restoring every dollar of the
cuts we were forced to make last
year and increasing aid by an ad-
ditional $30 million. We are keep-
ing faith with our commitment to
New Jerseys children and fami-
lies, spending more money per
pupil on New Jerseys students
than almost any other state in the
country, Christie said. Now is
the time to complement the dol-
lars spent with real education re-
form to bring a focus on student
learning, accountability and re-
sults.
The Lenape Regional High
School District received an in-
crease of about $1.3 million more
from its 2011-12 initial total of
$25.8 million. The Evesham K-8
School District received an in-
crease of about $718,000 over its
2011-2012 total of $12.2 million.
Evesham K-8 BOE President
Sandy Student said it was a great
surprise to receive the funding
from the state, but it would most
likely have several restrictions
for how the school district can
spend the additional monies.
This is a great thing. The state
gives it to us, but the state also
has certain restrictions as to
what you can use the money for.
Can we do some solar project that
will save the district money? Gen-
erate our own power? Those are
always ideal things that we can
look at, Student said. Can we
use it for some media lab and li-
brary materials? How about in-
creasing some of our spending in
technology. Possibly more white
boards for our classrooms. Well
have to see.
Lenape Regional High School
District Business Administrator
Jim Hagar said the school district
would likely know more about
how it could spend the additional
state funding in the coming

Its probably a very good thing
that Evesham Fire-Rescue re-
ceived an almost $50,000 grant
from the government in late June.
The local rescue company recent-
ly purchased new extrication
equipment using the federal
grant award to replace aging
equipment within the depart-
ment, and it was put to the test al-
most immediately in a life-threat-
ening situation.
According the fire commis-
sions Business Manager Paul
Thomas, the new equipment re-
placed a system which has been
in service in Evesham Township
for about the past 30 years. The
new equipment was selected after
an evaluation of various manu-
facturers of hydraulic rescue
equipment by a workgroup of
both volunteer and career mem-
bers.
Theres been a lot of advance-
ment in the technology. The
newer tools are lighter and more
powerful, so there was an interest
in upgrading them, Thomas
said.
Hydraulic rescue equipment is
used to remove people entangled
or entrapped in vehicle accidents,
industrial accidents, and other
scenarios requiring heavy lifting,
moving, and cutting of objects.
The fire district applied for and
received an Assistance to Fire-
fighters Grant, a federally-fund-
ed, highly-competitive grant pro-
gram which provides financial
assistance to fire departments.
As a condition of the grant,
Evesham Fire-Rescue matched a
percentage of the grant total
while the federal government pro-
vided the remainder of the total.
Evesham Fire-Rescue received
$44,100 in grant funding and
matched $4,900 for total funding
of $49,000. With the help of the
grant funding, Evesham Fire-Res-
cue was able to replace the equip-
ment with no increased cost to
the taxpayers.
The hydraulic equipment was
placed into service on Friday July
1, after 60 of Evesham Fire-Res-
cues firefighters received factory
training on the new hydraulic
tools.
Chief Ted Lowden said he is
proud of the outstanding work
performed by the workgroup in
specifying this new equipment.
In addition to assuring the
equipment was up to the tasks re-
quired, the workgroup also re-

Earlier in the month Team Eve-
sham assembled their bicycles
and took to the streets of
Philadelphia to raise money to
fight cancer.
Held on Sunday, July 10, Team
Evesham rode in the American
Cancer Societys event and trav-
eled from the Ben Franklin
Bridge in Philadelphia to Black-
water Pond Park in Buena.
Team Evesham had 28 cyclists
participate in the ride and raised
more than $7,800 for the Ameri-
can Cancer Society.
Riders could choose to com-
plete a 62-mile circuit or a 100-
mile route.
Team Evesham representative
Sandy Student said the next big
event for Team Evesham will be
to ride in the annual M.S. City to
the Shore ride which raises
money for research into a cure for
multiple sclerosis.

sham or any upcoming rides,

Helping those who help
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Marlton Sun
To show his appreciation for
the school that helped his autis-
tic son, John Braciszewski is do-
nating some of his earnings.
Braciszewski, who owns J
Brazz Auto Service Center on
Route 70 in Medford, gave 5 per-
cent of his gross profits in April
to the Richard L. Rice Elemen-
tary School in Evesham, specifi-
cally to the autism program at
the preschool. Braciszewski do-
nated $2,300. April is Autism
Awareness Month.
John, his wife Marla, his 5-
year-old son Brandon, and 3-
year-old daughter Ava live in
Marlton.
Marla said the entire donation
goes directly to the teachers.
Were hoping that it grows
every year, she said.
Brandon was officially diag-
nosed with autism when he was
2 and a half.
I had suspicions when he
was a year to 15 months, Marla
said, noting how Brandon
stopped using words and stopped
making eye contact.
She described how her son
would repeatedly open and close
doors and anything on a hinge,
even books. Brandon would
scream if you took him away
from a door. He would not play
with other kids, couldnt talk,
and had tantrums.
Marla contacted Burlington
County early intervention. It
doesnt diagnose but evaluates to
see if a family qualifies for cer-
tain services.
When Brandon was 15
months, the county program ad-
vised Marla to have him play as
much as possible with other kids
(he was an only child at that
time).
It didnt work.
The county saw him again at
18 months and said there were a
lot of red flags for autism,
Marla said.
So Brandon started occupa-
tional therapy and behavior
therapy (which included speech
therapy) until he was 3 and start-
ed preschool.
Once there, Brandon started
occupational therapy again,
physical therapy, and had his
own speech therapist.
He had words but he wasnt
using them to communicate,
Marla said, noting that Brandon
would scream instead of asking
simple questions and didnt even
point. Marla welled up when she
remembered when the speech
therapist who arrived to evalu-
ate Brandon found him hiding in
a box. The therapist crawled in
with him. Now Brandon, who
will be 6 next month, under-
stands, can carry on a conversa-
tion, can make eye contact, and
can point.
He spent two years in the Rice
program and one year at Robert
Jaggard Elementary School.
Brandon is not in an autism
group now but a class with mul-
tiple disabled students. Marla
said Brandons autism was rated
moderate to severe when he
started the Rice program and it
was considered mild when he
left. Brandon said he likes school
(mostly for the toys) and even his
little sister.
Hes doing 500 times better,
Marla said. Sometimes you see
him and you would never even
know he was autistic.
Still losing
But its still time to celebrate?
T
his must be an example of the new normal when it
comes to casinos in New Jersey.
Atlantic City casinos saw their revenues fall 3.7 percent in
June. The news was hailed by
some as a victory of sorts for
the industry since that was the
best showing since February,
when they saw revenue drop 1.4
percent.
Lets use gambling parlance
to translate: Hey, my slot ma-
chine stopped only one spot away from the jackpot! Or, That
horse I bet on to win came in a strong second!
You lose.
The casinos have been bleeding money. They still are bleed-
ing money. Only not as much. But it still stinks.
When it comes to the gambling race, New Jersey is way be-
hind, despite being given a huge head start. No sports betting.
Marketing efforts from the state/Atlantic City/the
casinos/some combination thereof are coordinated with all of
the precision and style of a kindergarten class first fire drill.
Nobody saw a threat from casinos popping up in neighboring
states: Dont worry about them. Those busloads of people
dont mind the extra two-hour drive. We have an ocean.
AC isnt dead, but it wont survive without dramatic changes:
a push to get sports gambling (which the state is trying to do,
but most likely wont succeed); coordinated marketing efforts;
cheaper food and hotels; and a general, overall effort to make
the place a destination point.
Vegas is Vegas for all of those reasons, and probably a few
more. And while that city has its problems housing bubble-
burst being No. 1 people still fly from all over the country to
visit, bypassing their local gambling joints to visit.
Until AC casinos get their act together, no one should be par-
tying on the boardwalk because the bad news isnt as bad.
A good bet?
Do you visit Atlantic City
casinos as often as you did
in the past, or do you visit
ones closer to home? Visit
www.marltonsun.com to
share your thoughts.
viewed the integrity of the sys-
tem, ease of use and cost of oper-
ation. This new equipment is
without a doubt the best we can
offer our citizens, Lowden said.
Just three days after the equip-
ment was put into place, on Mon-
day July 4 at 8 p.m., the hydraulic
rescue tools were used to free a
trapped occupant from a motor
vehicle accident at Main Street
and Evans Road in just 10 min-
utes time.
As Evesham Fire-Rescue crews
were preparing for the launch of
the fireworks on the Fourth of
July at the Cherokee High School
Complex, they were alerted of a
motor vehicle accident with en-
trapment at Main Street and
Evans Road. Crews arrived to
find one person trapped and
worked quickly to extricate them.
Evesham EMS and Virtua ALS
transported the occupant to Coop-
er Trauma for evaluation. Eve-
sham Police are investigating the
cause of the accident. Crews
cleaned up from the extrication
and returned to the fireworks
standby where the fireworks were
launched without incident.
The final home meet of the sea-
son for Woodstream Swim team
was held on Saturday, July 9.
Though the Barracudas lost to
Greenfields 339-180, it was a bit-
tersweet meet as the team said
goodbye to six seniors in their
swim outs. Dan Bennett, the
Burlington County Swimmer of
the Year, will be headed to Leigh
University to major in business
and accounting on a swim schol-
arship. Alexandra Charbeneau, a
holder of three individual Wood-
stream records, will attend James
Madison University to study in-
ternational business. Jamie
Grant, a 12-year Barracuda, will
attend Newman University in the
fall majoring in elementary and
special education. Allison Maso-
ero, an active member of her
church and a member of three
separate school honor societies,
will be matriculating at Virginia
Tech as a math major in the fall.
Melanie Sage, a four-year varsity
swimmer who helped to rebuild
houses after Hurricane Katrina,
will be studying architecture at
Drexel University. Finally, Lucas
Troncone will be attending
Burlington County College this
September. After a dozen years of
swimming, Lucas hopes to coach
wrestling in the future. The high-
light of the meet for the Barracu-
das in the pool was the breaking
of an individual team record.
Bennett broke his own record for
the 15-18 boys 200 meter individ-
ual medley with a time of 2:14.53,
beating his own record of 2:15.38
that was set just last week.
Woodstream had five double
winners of the day: Jamie Bowne,
girls 11 to 12, 50 meter back (35.54)
and 50 meter fly (32.71), Morgan
Sage, girls 13 to 14, 100 meter indi-
vidual medley (1:14.17) and 50
meter breaststroke (40.37);
Alexandra Charbeneau, girls 15
to 18, 100 meter individual medley
(1:12.43) and 50 meter back (34.76);
Ryan Fanelli, boys 9 to 10, 25
meter backstroke (19.76) and 25
meter breaststroke (20.50); Danny
Bennett, boys 15 to 18, 200 meter
individual medley (2:15.38) and
100 meter breaststroke (1:11.40).

Deputy Mayor Joe Howarth
honored another Eagle Scout re-
cently as he awarded Jaysel Shah
a proclamation for obtaining the
highest rank that a Scout can
achieve.
The Eagle Scout completed a
project in which he refurbished a
courtyard at the Animal Welfare
Association of Voorhees.
Howarth said that Shah re-
paired and repainted broken pic-
nic tables and improved the land-
scaping by removing small trees
and replacing deteriorated land-
scape tiles. He coordinated volun-
teers to refill the main walkway
with fresh stone and create a
river stone border.
His project, Howarth said, pro-
vided needed improvement to a
local non-profit organization and
demonstrated his appreciation of
their services to homeless ani-
mals.
The project was supposed to
take several days, Shah said, but
because he was able to get so
many volunteers, it took less than
one day.
