Littoral submarine with ocean-going capabilities The A26 submarine is purposed for mainly littoral operations but will also possess ocean-going capa-bilities. It will be powered by a conventional diesel-electric propulsion machinery, and equipped with Kockums Stirling AIP system (air-independent pro-pulsion). The Stirling system, together with a set of balanced underwater signature properties, will make the A26 submarine very stealthy and difficult to detect. It will also, due to a careful and verified shock resistance design, be highly invulnerable to under-water explosions. Flexible payload and network connectivity The A26 design includes a new innovative flexible payload capability with a flexible payload lock system in addition to its conventional torpedo tubes. Furthermore it will be prepared for network connectivity.

A highly modular design facilitates efficient through-life upgrades and adaptations. Extended Air independent Propulsion Improved AIP performance will enable the submarine to remain submerged for greatly extended periods of time, invaluable in both peacetime and conflict scenarios. Increased sensor range Much of the A26 submarine is focused on under-water intelligence. A full suit of improved sensors with optimised shape in combination with extremely sophisticated signature adaptation and management systems, will provide for increased sensor range and high situational awareness.
