HAWLEY S APPLIANCE

 Designed by Charles Hawley in 1908  It is the most frequently used appliance as a

retainer.

Components
 Passive labial bow (21 guage wire)  Adams clasp(22 guage wire) or

C- clasp (21 guage wire)


 Pin head clasp(21 guage wire)  Acrylic base plate

Indications
 As a retainer after orthodontic correction  Active hawleys appliance is used for

correction of minor spaces.


 Mild proclination  Can be used with other appliances.

Contraindication
 Severe class II or class III cases  Rotation  Severe proclination  Where bodily movement of tooth is

required

Limitations
 Only simple malocclusionscan be corrected  Bodily tooth movement cannot be achived  Difficulty in speech initially  Pateints co-operation is must  Uncontrolled tipping  Can be easily distorted or broken

Fabrication
 Preparation of cast  Wire bending of various components  Blocking of undercuts  Positioning of wire components  Marking the extentions of base plate

 Application of separating media  Acrylization of base plate  Removal of appliance from the cast  Trimming  Finishing and polishing
