built Fort St. George. In 1651, / eng set up a factory at Hughli. In 1661, / eng got Bombay from Georles II at a nominal rent of 10 pounds per yr. Geogles II got Bombay as dowry on his marriage with a Portuguese princess. Bombay one of / leading trading centers of / company in India. In 1690, / eng set up a factory at Culcutta & in 1696, they built Fort William. In1717, / Mughal emperor Farrukh Siyyar permitted / eng to carry out duty free trade in Bengal. In return they had to make an annual payment of 3000 rs to / emperor. / eng east India company got various trade concessions & made great progress. Bombay, Madras & Culcutta occupied strategic positions which facilitated brisk trade. The French East India Company: France also wanted to establish trading posts along with / other European countries.In 1664, / French East India company was established due to / efforts of Colbert, / minister of Louis XIV. They established factories at SURAT 7 Masulipattinam.In 1674, they set up a settelement in Pondicherry,which became / headquaters of / French settelements in India .Their other settelements were Chandranagar in Bengal. Mahe on / Malabar coast & Karaikal on / Coromandal Coast. There was fierce competition & rivalry among / companies of Europe in matter of trade. This let to wars among themselves. / Brities & / French drove away / Portuguese, / Dutch & /Dances./ interests of / eng & / French clashed regarding / trading / trade concessions. This led to / Carnatic Wars at / end of which / eng emerged successful.
