What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes mellitus, often simply referred to as mellitus, diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the body sugar, does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do insulin, not respond to the insulin that is produced. First identified as a disease associated with "sweet urine," and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead (hyperglycemia) to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine.
