August 10, 2011 Hello Parents, New Students, and Returning Students, This semester is going to be very exciting.

We have A Midsummer Nights Dream, in which all theatre students will be involved, in October and A Christmas Carol, in which we are doing a dinner with in December. We have two concerts planned with the possibility of adding another, depending on the group. One concert will be for BETA club inductions and the other will be our annual Christmas Concert, where ALL students (theatre and choir) will be involved. What a great semester to look forward to. As we move forward, there are several things you should know upfront about your student being involved in this program. They are outlined below. At the end of this packet, there is also a Theatre/Choir behavior contract that needs to be signed by the parent/guardian, one in which you will keep for your records and the other one return back to me. On the back of the behavior contract is a booster club information sheet. Please fill this form out if you are interested in being involved with our booster club. Thank you and I look forward to working with you and your student this semester! THEATRE/CHORUS FYI - AFTERSCHOOL REHEARSALS are required for A Midsummer Nights Dream. We will do what we can in class, but not all of it can be done in class. You will get a rehearsal schedule so you know when rehearsals are. Your student will also get a conflict calendar. Please make sure all conflicts (family, sports, religious) are filled in so that I can work around these. Three missed rehearsals = removal from production. - ATTENDANCE to productions/concerts is MANDATORY if your student is in the show/concert. It is important that if your student commits to being in a show/chorus, they follow through with that commitment. This is a theatre/chorus class, performances should be expected, and the performance is for a grade. - If you are in a show, and have a fun and interesting hair color or interesting piercings that can be seen outside of clothing; hair must be dyed back to a more natural color and piercings should be removed. A character form the 1800s probably didnt have an unnatural hair color. If student refuses, performance opportunity is taken away, grade is docked for not performing. Feel free to change the hair color back after the run of the show is over. - FUNDRAISING: Because fee money is the only money allotted to us by our school system, we must do fundraising. Your student is not required to sell anything. Your student is not required to purchase anything (with the exception of our T-Shirts or Polos), but your student is required to participate. What exactly does that mean? It means that if we sell candy, your student doesnt have to do that. However, if we have a yard sale or a car wash, your student is required to sign up for a time slot to work. If your student is benefiting from our limited funding, dont you think your student should help wash a car?

- BOOSTER CLUB INFO We have a parent supported Booster Club for the North and South Stokes Performing Arts (both because if you do not know already, I am a split position, NSHS in the fall and SSHS in the spring). If you would like to be a part of this, please do so. In the spring, when we do our All County Musical (NSHS, SSHS, and WSHS theatre and choir students are invited to audition and participate), your efforts are greatly needed to help raise funds for this. Your efforts are greatly needed all year long. You help give input as to what we can do to raise funds, you volunteer at productions and concerts, and you do a lot! I cant do it alone, so if you are interested, please send the form back. If youre not interested, that is completely fine too. Meetings are once a month. For the first semester they are at NSHS for the second semester they are at SSHS. You can attend one or both semesters! - GRADING: Mr. Bulla how do you grade my student? I grade on a point system. Everything is worth points. If you dont do it, you dont get the points. The semester consists of 1000 points. Three points a day are earned for just participating in class (270 total points). See syllabus online. I take off participation points for talking at inappropriate times, not turning in home work or other assignments, chewing gum in class, having/using your cell phone during instructional time without permission, and the general breaking of classroom rules. Tests/quizzes are worth a certain amount of points per each, homework is worth a certain amount of points per each, and performances are typically 100-300 points per performances. - WEBSITE: Please visit our website often! www.stokestheatre.weebly.com Here you will find A LOT of information that you will need. The calendar and assignments link is very useful. Youll know exactly when your student has something due and what their assignments are. Show and concert dates are also listed on this page. It is a valuable resource, so please use it. A copy of the syllabus is also online. - ROLES: I do not HAVE to discuss why your student did/didnt get a certain solo or role. It is the same as sports. Coaches do not have to discuss playing time with you, I do not have to discuss your students playing time with you. If you have questions as to how your student can become a better performer if they are interested enough, we can discuss that. Discussion of roles wont happen. - VOICE LESSONS Your student can take voice lessons with me. Please contact me for more information. - CONTACTING ME: If you ever have any questions regarding your student, their work, performances, etc, you can feel free to contact me here at school! I am always open to discussing your student with you and answering any questions you may have. E MAIL: justin.bulla@stokes.k12.nc.us PHONE: 336-593-8134 PLANNING: First period 7:45-9:22.
