 liberalization 1990 Licenses were given to Private banks (Prime Minister P.V. NARASIMHA RAO)  1st Private bank: Global Trust Bank( now merged with Oriental Bank of Commerce)  followed by AXIS(UTI) bank, ICICI & HDFC.

NATIONALIZATION OF BANKS:
 nationalization of 14 banks took place on July 20, 1969 (Prime minister Indira Gandhi)
