Then select two of the statements and on the back of this paper in a paragraph for each explain why this detail is important to our understanding of U.S. history. 1. p. 1148 The Greece-Turkish aid bill was passed to provide financial aid and military training to Greece and Turkey so they could resist communism. 2. p. 1148-1149 The Truman Doctrine was proclaimed in 1947 to protect subjugated peoples. George Kennan explained the Doctrine as containing communism. 3. p. 1149 George Marshalls plan provided aid to the countries of western Europe in order to stimulate their economies. 4. 1150 The Berlin air lift was used to provide aid to West Berlin after the Soviets blockaded it. The airlift lasted until the blockade was lifted on May 12, 1949 5. p. 1150-1152 The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created on April 4, 1949 to create an alliance the Soviet Union. It was signed by 12 nations at first, then expanded. 6. p. 1153- 1154 In April 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first modern day black baseball player after being signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers. 7. p. 1156-1157 The Dixiecrats were a party formed for the 1948 elections that hoped to split the electoral votes and win the election in the House of Representatives. 8. p. 1157-1159 Harry Truman won the election of 1948 in an upset of Thomas Dewey. Truman won 303 electoral votes and 49.5 percent of the popular vote. 9. p. 1153 Truman was a strong supported of civil rights, condemning the KKK and the practice of lynching. He also helped establish the Fair Employment Practices Committee to regulated racism in the workplace. 10. p. 1152 Israel became Independent on May 14, 1948, much to the dismay of neighboring states. Israel joined the United Nations the next year.
