CHALO BHARAT DEKHO
AGRA: The home of one of the wonders of the world – The Taj Mahal. The Mughal Emperor
Shah Jahan built the Taj in marble in 1675 in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. The
Agar Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned city of Emperor Akbar, are other fine examples of
the great building skills of the Mughals.
AJANTA: The Buddhist Caves of Ajanta predate the Ellora Caves and are justly famous for their
radiant paintings. The 29 Caves are cut deep into the steep face of a deep rock gorge. There are
some fine sculptures that should be viewed as the prelude to the still more magnificent Ellora
sculptures. (Also see Ellora Caves).
AURANGABAD: Aurangabad is a base for visitors to the famous Ellora & Ajanta caves. These
are all on Buddhist themes and were carved in the 6th – 7th century.
BANGALORE: Known as the ‘Garden City’, Bangalore is now the center of the information
technology industry in India. Its shopping arcades pubs and discotheques are popular with the
young. The 25 feet high statue of Nandi, the Holy Bull at the Bull Temple, the palace of Tipu
Sultan, the king of Mysore, who fought the British in 1787 and the sprawling Lalbagh Gardens
are other attractions. Attractive shopping includes Kid’s Kemp, reputedly the largest shop in all
Asia.
BHUBANESHWAR: KNOWN AS Temple Town and Cathedral City due to its many temples in
the extravagant Oriyan Style, it is a sprawling, rapidly expanding city. The most notable features
of the temples are the soaring towers and the intricate carvings that cover every exposed surface
of the temples.
BADRINATH: Situated in the lap of Nar-Narayan Parvat, with the towering Neelkanth peak
(6,597mt) in the background, Badrinath is one of the most revered Hindu Shrines of India. It has
been said that “there were many sacred spots of pilgrimage in the heaven, earth and the other
world but neither is there any equal to Badrinath nor shall there be one.”
It is believed that to revive the lost prestige of Hinduism and to unite the country in one bond, Adi
Guru Sri Shankaracharya built four pilgrimage centers in four corners of India. Among them were
Badrikashram in the north, Rameshwaram in the south, dwarkapuri in the west and Jagannath
Puri in the east.
Badrinath situated at an elevation of 3,133mt is considered to be amongst the most pious.
BILASPUR: Overlooking the vast Govind Sager reservoir of the Bhakra Dam, Bilaspur is on the
main highway between Chandigarh and Mandi. It has some old and interesting temples. A little
ahead of the town is a well-located Restaurant Lake View with a fine outlook over the reservoir.
BHARATPUR: Bharatpur was an unusual Kingdom of Rajasthan because it was the only one
that was ruled by a dynasty of Jats – peasant sons of the soil – rather than Rajputs. Under its
aggressive rulers, the kingdom of Bharatpur became a major military and political force in the
18th and 19th centuries, its armies sweeping the plains of northern India, virtually olds and masters
of all they surveyed. However, the history of Bharatpur goes back far, far earlier, to the great
ancient kingdom of Matsyadesh that fluorides here around the 5ht century BC. There are several
fine archeological remains of this civilization that you can see in the Bharatpur Museum.

2
CHAMBA: Chamba town (915m) stands on the Right Bank of the river Ravi. As a former
princely state, it is one of the oldest in the country and dates back to the sixth century. It is well
known for its splendid architecture and as the base for numerous excursions. It is also a district
head quarters.
CHIDAMBARAM: The ancient Chola Temple with a gilded roof, tall gateways (or gopurams)
and the thousand-pillared hall are the most venerated of Shiva Temples. Here he is represented as
Nataraja, the cosmic Dancer.
COCHIN: The natural harbor city, called the “Queen of the Arabian Sea” has the quaint Chinese
Fishing Nets, testimonial to its maritime links with the Chinese, as well as buildings influenced
by its various early visitors – the Arabs, the Jews, the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British. It is
the commercial capital of Kerala. A cruise in the beautiful backwaters of Kerala is a must.
DELHI: Flamboyant, self – confident Delhi, the capital is actually two cities, New and Old Delhi
the capital of Mughal India contains many mosques and monuments from the 12th to the 19th
century. The British built New Delhi with its numerous historical buildings, gardens and free
lined avenues is colorful and cosmopolitan. It is famous for the range of shopping complexes
from the up market Haus Khaus Village and Santhushti, to the bargain shopping complexes of
Palika Bazaar, Janpath and Sarojini Market. There is shopping to suit all budgets and tastes.
DALHOUISE: In western Himachal Pradesh, the hill station as Dollhouse is full of 'Old World'
charm and holds lingering echoes of the 'RAJ'. It covers an area of about 14 Esq. and is built on
five hills- Kathiog, Potrey, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun. It is named after the British Governor
General of the 19th century, Lord Dollhouse. The town's height varies between 1,525m and
2,378m, and varied vegetation pines, deodars, oaks and flowering rhododendron, surround it.
Dollhouse has charming colonial architecture, including some beautiful churches. Its location
presents panoramic views of the plains - and like a long silver line, the river Ravi twists and turns
below Dollhouse. The spectacular snow covered Dhauladhar Mountains are also visible from this
enchanting town.
DHARMSALA: The high snow clad Dhauladar ranges of the Himalayas from a magnificent
backdrop to the hill resort of Dharamshala. This is the principal township of Kangada and
overlooks the wide spread of the planes. With the dense pine and deodar forest, numerous streams
cool healthy air and attractive surroundings and nearby snow line, Dharamsala has everything for
a perfect holiday. It is full of life and yet peaceful. And not surpassingly, the headquarters of His
Holiness the Dalai Lama are here.
Covering a wide area in the form of a twin settlement, Lower Dharmsala (1380m) is a busy
commercial center while Upper Dharamsala (1830m) with the suburbs of McLeodganj and
Forsythia, retains a British flavor and colonial lifestyle. The charming church of St.John in the
Wilderness is situated here and this is the final resting-place of lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of
India during the 19th century. There are also large Tibetan communities who have made this there
home.
Numerous ancient, temples like Jawlamukhi, Brijeshwari and Chamunda lie on the planes below
Dharamshala.
ELLORA: The Ellora caves are noted for their sculptures and the “piece de resistance’ is the
Kailasa Temple where an annual dance and music festival is held. There are 34 caves with
Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples. Many have elaborate entrance halls to the main shrines. The
12 Buddhist temples are calmly contemplative and denote the first phase of the Ellora caves. The
17 dramatic, impressive Hindu temples are dynamic and energetic. The five Jain temples have
exceptionally detailed carvings. (Also see Ajanta Caves).
FATEHPUR SIRKI: beautiful mosque contains elements of Persian and Hindu design and is
said to be a copy of the mosque at Mecca. The main entrance is through the impressive 54m high
Buland Darwaza, the Gate of Victory, constructed to commemorate Akbar’s victory in Gujarat. A
Koranic inscription inside its archway quotes Jesus say. The world is a bridge, pass over it but
build no house upon it. He who hopes for an hour may hope for eternity’ which seems highly

3
appropriate considering the fate of the city. Just outside the gateway is a deep well and, when
sufficient numbers of tourists assembler, local daredevils leap from the top of the entrance into
the water.
GANGOTRI: This sacred shrine, situated at an altitude of 3,200 Mt is the source of the river
Bhagirathi. The mountain peaks of shivling, satopanth and Bhagirathi sisters surround it.
Accessible by a motorable road, it is one of the most pious Hindu pilgrimages.
GANGTOK: Capital to the quaint Mountain State of Sikkim, the name means “high place” and
is located in the Himalayas. The setting is spectacular, with quaint wooden buildings. The Tsanlgu
lake lies 3750 meters above sea level, meriting its description ‘frozen lake’ much of the year. It is
34 kms east of Gangtok and just 8 kms from the Tibetan border. A two-hour drive from Gangtok
offers some of the most spectacular views in the world.
GOA: This former Portuguese enclave is renowned for its palm fringed beaches and has a
character very different from the rest of India. Gleaming whitewashed churches with Portuguese
style facades, lovely, colorful markets all make it an experience not to be missed.
BELUR & HALEBID (HASSAN): Home to exquisite temples that are masterpieces in stones.
The star shaped pedestal and the walls covered with the perfectly proportioned figures of dancers
all musicians of the Chennakesava temple seem about to spring into life any moment. Nearby is
Saravanagelagola with the towering statue of the Jain saint Gomateshwara; the 1000-year-old
figure is a masterpiece of symmetry.
JAIPUR: Jaipur or the “Pink City” is one of the jewel-like cities of Royal Rajasthan with an
irresistible flavor of the unique Rajput culture. The city Palace in the center of Jaipur occupies
one seventh of its area and houses the Textile and Costume museum with its breathtaking brocade
royal garments of pure gold and studded with precious gems. There are also the Arms and Armor
Museum and the Art Gallery with its numerous priceless miniatures. The Amber Fort epitomizes
the warrior Rajputs, with their martial tradition and love of exquisite architecture. It is Shish
Mahal (Place of Mirrors) and Sukh Nivas- a pleasure palace with a marble watercourse to cool he
ivory and sandalwood inlaid doors. A romantic rides on a decorated elephant up to the fort and
you become as royal as any king of yore.
KEDARNATH: The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot
situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. At an altitude of 3,581mt it is a
14km trek from Gaurikund.
Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva, the protector and the destroyer. Shiva is considered the
embodiment of all passions – love, hatred, fear, death and mysticism that are expressed through
his various forms.
There are more than 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in Chamoli district itself; the most
important one is Kedarnath. According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the
Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the
blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge
at Kedarnath in the form of a bull.
On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining
portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and is worshipped there as his
manifestations.
The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, and the belly at Madmaheshwar and his
locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath and the four above-mentioned shrines are
treated as Panch Kedar.
KANCHEEPURAM: The city of a thousand temples in the past is one of the seven most sacred
pilgrim centers for the Hindus. Today it has around 126 temples. It is famous for hand – woven
silk and cotton fabrics. The rich silk as well as cotton saris are woven in contrasting colors, with
traditional and modern motifs and gold threads. Take time to visit one of the weavers and view
the fine art almost as tradition bound as in days of yore.

4
KHAJJIAR: Other called 'India's Mini Switzerland’; the exquisite of Khajjiar (1960m) has a
circumference of about 05kms. Along its fringes, thick forests of deodar climb the slopes. The
snow- line rests above these woods and in the center of the glade, do streams that traverse the
green carpet feed a small lake. At Khajjiar there is a 12th century temple dedicated to Khajinag.
Within the temple are life-size wooden images of the five Pandava brothers.
KHAJURAHO: once great Chandelle capital visitors for the erotic sculptures have singled out
this village and its temples. The superb Indo – Aryan architecture of the temples have
exceedingly fine and artistic stonework that depict Indian life 1000 years ago and are a joyous
celebration of all aspects of life.
KODAIKANAL: With the small artificial lake as its focus the fast hill growing resort town of
Kodaikanal has lovely views across the waters and into the surrounding woods.
KONARK: Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the great temple of Konark
overwhelms the mind by the sheer magnitude of the architect’s imagination. The entire temple
has been conceived as a chariot for Surya, the Sun God. The base has 24 gigantic carved stone
wheels and seven mighty stone horses haul the chariot. The whole edifice is covered with
carvings, sculptures, figures and bas-relief.
KINNAUR: About 250kms away from Shimla is the strikingly beautiful district of Kinnaur,
where the icy waters of the River Sutlej and its tributaries have carved deep gorges through the
high ranges. The landscape varies from the lush green orchards of the picturesque Sangla Valley
to the strark magnificence of the Hang rang Valley.
Along the valley of the River Baspa, terraced fields surround villages that cling to the steep
slopes above the gorge. Higher still, are beautiful Rolling Meadows spiked with iris and wild
flowers in spring and dotted with shrubs of rhododendron in varying shade of pink. The massive
snow clad ranges that provided a regal dignity to the scene are dominated by the peak of the
Kinner Kailash revered by the Kinnauris as the abode of Lord Shiva.
KUMARAKOM (KOTTAYAM): A small pretty tourist complex set on the Vembanad Lake.
Kottayam, is a beautiful old town chockfull of lovely churches, and clear vistas of the hills
beyond? Try the rejuvenating powers of the mystical ayurvedic treatments, which have been
tested over the centuries. As you cruise on the rice boat your boatman can whip up a traditional
Kerala meal.
KULLU: Kullu (1220m) was once known Kulanthpitha ' the end of the habitable world'. Beyond
rose the forbidding heights of the Greater Himalayas, and by the banks of the shinning river Beas,
lay the fabled 'Silver Valley'.
Kullu got its first motor able access only after Independence. The long entries of seclusion have
however allowed the area to retain a considerable measure of its traditional charm. Here is the
core of an intricate web of numerous valleys each of which
Is a visual delight and seems more beautiful than the other.
The 'silver valley' has nature's treasures that lie carelessly scattered as flowers on the high
meadows. This wealth nestles by every tree in the splendid forests; it bursts forth in the looms
and in the fruit of every orchard. Here are riches, which cannot be measured, and echo down the
ages with the words of every myth and ancient largest and glow in the warm smiles of its
gentlepeople. There is pleasure in every step you take in these enchanted valleys and in every
gurgle you hear in the clear mountain streams.
LAHAUL: The high Rohtang Pass (3980m), at the top of the Kullu Valley very near Manali, is
the main entry point to the stark splendor of Lahaul a part of the district of Lahaul - Spiti. The
Manali - Leh Road, one of the highest highways in the world, crosses the subdivision linking
Keylong, its headquarters, to Manali.
After leaving behind the lush green meadows and orchards of the Kullu Valley, the change in the
landscape is dramatic and the road descends from the Rohtang Pass into a landscape of bare hills,
steep ridges, cliffs of bare rock, deep ravines and valleys strewn with the moraine left behind by

5
receding glaciers. Little villages with their patchwork of green fields, located near gushing
streams, provide color and relief to this rather forbidding landscape.
Lahaul with its curious mix of Buddhism and Hinduism has fine gompas (monasteries) and
temples. The gompas, repositories of Lahaul's rich store of Buddhist art and culture, are the focus
of the entire social activity and festivity in the region.
MANDI: Mandi at the lower end of the Beas Valley, 760m above sea level, is a 400 years old
town strategically located on an old trade route into Tibet. It has picturesque old buildings,
narrow streets and colorful bazaars. Mandi is also famous for its beautifully sculpted stone
temples of Panchvaktra, Ardhanarishwar, Triloknath and Bhutnath.
MADRAS (CHENNAI): The metropolis is the largest of the Southern Indian cities and is a
gateway to the South and an ideal point to head off anywhere in peninsular India. It retains much
of its cultural and traditional charm. It has some fine examples of the Indo-Saracenic style of
buildings and is home to the second longest beach in the world – the Marina. There is also the
Cholamandalam Artists Village, the only one of its kind in the world and Kalashetra a famous
institute for dance. Numerous temples and Churches dot the city.
MANALI: One day, Vaivasvata, the seventh incarnation of Manu found a tiny fish in his bathing
water. The fish told him to look after it with devotion for one day it would do him a great service.
The seventh Manu cared for the fish till the day it grew so huge that he released it into the sea.
Before departing, the fish warned Manu of an impending deluge when the entire world would be
submerged and bade him to build a seaworthy ark. When the flood came, Matsuya, the fish -
which is regarded as the first avatar of Lord Vishnu, towed to Vaivasvata and the Seven Sages
safely. As the waters subsided the seventh Manu's ark came to rest on a hillside and the place was
named Manali (2050m) after him.
As the earth slowly dried, here arose a place of breath taking natural beauty - which was only
appropriate for it was at Manali that life began again. And today this legendary cradle of all
human kind is a prime holiday’s destination. There are high mountains surrounded by silent
snows and deep boulder strewn gorges. There is thick forest full of cool breezes and bird song.
There are fields of wild flowers, small picturesque hamlets and fruit laden orchards.
MAHABALIPURAM: This major seaport of the Pallava Dynasty is a wonderful natural
Museum displaying the wealth of Pallava temple Architecture and craftsmanship. The 100-year-
old lighthouse guided sailors from as far away as Java, Sumatra and China. The world’s largest
bas-relief carving, several rock cut temples, the lovely shore temple, a beautiful beach line add to
the charm of the seafront. You can pick up sculptures from the artisans who still follow the
traditional methods of their ancestors.
MADURAI: The Temple City of Maduari is one of the most ancient cities in India. It has one of
the most awe inspiring and revered temples, the Meenakshi Amma Temple. The huge complex,

hawkers who litter the temple complex

it’s the opulent super rich and the poorest of the poor, Victorian monuments, mega constructions,
slums, Mumbai is India to its last stone.

Wodeyar Kings. It is justly proud of its magnificent and well-kept palace. Enroute lies
Srirangapatanam with the king Tipu Sultan’s beautiful summer palace, the Daria Daulat and
Ranganathithu bird sanctuary.
OOTY: At an altitude of 7500 ft. the Queen of the Blue Mountains have splendid green downs,
lofty hills and pleasant summers. Scenic beauty inviting picnics, treks and boat rides on the lake
are attractive options for the visitors.

6
PALAMPUR: The Kangra valley, of which PALAMPUR (1249m) is a major’s station, was the
"Triagrta" of old. It was one of the leading hill states and was once a part of the kingdom of
Jalandara.
In local parlance, the word for " Lots of water " is "Pullman". This is what has given Palampur its
name and it is water that has given the valley so much of its character. Countless streams and
brooks crises-cross the landscape and in their intricate mesh, hold tea gardens and rice paddies.
The town came into being when the tea bush was introduced in the 19th century and Palampur
became a focus for the planters. Kangra tea, with its center at Palampur, has been internationally
acclaimed since then.
To further bless this area with remarkable natural beauty, the Dhauladhar ranges rise dramatically
from the earth, just beyond Palampur. The town itself has some interesting colonial architecture
and the area around is richly garnished with historical temples and forts - and scores of
picturesque hamlets.
PONDICHERRY: As one approaches the waterfront and enters the town, which was exclusively
French, the architecture is almost identical with that of Southern French towns, particularly along
the Mediterranean. Auroville, the City of Dawn has people of different countries living together
following the teachings of universal brotherhood and peace preached by Sri Aurobindo the saint
and his disciple the Mother. Excellent handmade products are available at their outlet in
Pondicherry.
PUNE: Most western visitors visit Pune for the Osho Commune International, the ashram of
theta Bagman Rajaneesh. It has interesting museums, temple and gardens.
PURI: One of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage centers, life revolves around the famous Jagannath
Temple whom’s Chariot Festival inspired the word “Juggernaut”. There is an interesting
excursion to the village of Raghurajpur (10kms away from Puri), where artists practice patachitra
paintings done on specially prepared coated cotton cloth, over which natural colurs are applied.
PARWANOO: Along the National Highway 22, as you cross the state border from haryana into
Himachal, it is Parwanoo (470m) that welcomes you. A couple of decades ago, this was a sleepy
little village and today, it is a pulsating industrial town. Fruit based products and plastics, motor
parts and watch components and a whole lot more roll out of parwanoo’s factories. For the
tourist, Parwanoo is a convenient base station to see and visit a number of nearby areas.

Rewalsar with its curious floating islands of reed.
It is believed that the Buddhist sage and teacher Padmasambhava departed for Tibet from
Rewalsar, to spread the message of Buddha. Buddhist pilgrims come every year to the ancient
Nyingmapa monastery on the banks of the lake. There is a temple and the Hindus and Sikhs also
hold gurdwara by the lake as it sacred.
RISHIKESH: Spiritual haven of the Hindus, it is the base for visits to some of the holiest of
Hindu pilgrim centers. It has large yoga center. The Ganga Aarti at the riverbank transports you
to a spiritual world as devotional songs waft over the town in the evening breeze.
SPITI: A high altitude cold desert, Spiti, lying in the rain shadow of rugged mountain ranges has
very little rain and an abundance of snow. It is out of land of fairy tales and fantasies. Stark
ranges that seem painted in shades of russets, purple and pink, eroded mountain –
Sides strewn with boulders, deep gorges carved out by swift flowing snow-fed streams, are a part
of its surrealistic landscape. Small villages of box - like houses along the river valleys, which
stand amid lush fields and groves of juniper, poplar and willow, provide splashes of green during
the brief summer months. For the rest of the year, Spiti is blanketed with snow and temperatures
remain well under zero.
Spiti with a strong Buddhist tradition has nearly thirty monasteries or gompas strung along the
valley, guardians of a rich cultural heritage that is very cold.

7
SUNDERNAGAR: Close to Mandi, Sundernagar (1,174m) is on the edge of a fertile valley. On
top of a hill near by are the Sukhdev Vatika and the temple of Mahamaya. A part of the huge
Beas - Sutlej Project is located here.

ruined temples, a fort, pavilions and a palace, besides the wildlife. Project Tiger has resulted in
considerable increase in the Tiger Population here. The sanctuary has blue bulls, sambar, spotted
deer, and wild boar and has course tigers.
SHIMLA: A relic of the British Empire with bandstands, mock Elizabethan houses with exotic
names, churches and clubs. Very often you would even be witness to the shooting of a Hindi
Movie, as Shimla is a popular locale for outdoor shooting.
SRINAGAR: The Switzerland of India is located amidst tranquil lakes where life in the
houseboats is like a dream come true. The houseboats are smaller versions of a luxuriously

best willows of the valley.

YAMUNOTRI: The shrine of Yamunotri, situated at an elevation of about 3,235 Mt is a point of
paramount religious importance for Hindus and an essential pilgrimage. Situated in the direction
opposite to Gangotri, the road bifurcates from palace called Dharasu, some where between

and Barkot.
