Style Exercise 2 In The Elements of Style, Strunk and White recommend that writers use the active voice

whenever possible. They argue that this will make most sentences more direct and vigorous. In the examples below, decide if the sentence is in the ACTIVE or PASSIVE voice. If it is in the PASSIVE voice, rewrite so that it is ACTIVE. Youll notice that some passive sentences are also indeterminate, meaning its not clear who is doing the acting. In these cases, you might have to take a guess at the subject of the verbI know that this is infuriating, but its just one of the unfortunate byproducts of using the passive voice.

1. It has been argued by many politicians that the country is on the wrong track.

2. Evidence was recovered at the scene of the crime.

3. The news disturbed me profoundly.

4. Sarah was beaten by Jack each time they played Scrabble.

5. The team was close to coming back, but they couldnt pull it off in the end.

6. There were many students who resented the new policy.

7. It is believed that the changes were brought about by the administration to prevent plagiarism.

8. Joness new evidence convinced most skeptics.

9. The student was encouraged by his teacher.

10. I agree with Williamss analysis on the whole, but with some reservations.
