Willy is a walking contradiction. Explain.

The perfect words to describe Willy Loman are a walking contradiction. Willy always contradicts what other have to say, let it be his wife, his children or even himself. When Linda, Willys wife advices him to talk to his boss about transferring him to New York so that Willy does not have to travel so far everyday; Willy immediately contradicts her by saying they dont need me in New York. Im the New England man. Im vital in New England. Although Linda is speaking for Willys own benefit he must contradict her and when she puts him in a tough position he enters this dream states as a defence mechanism. Even when Willy was talking about his son Biff, Willy says The trouble is he is lazy goddammit! And follows by saying Biff is a lazy bum! But a moment later Willy says Theres one thing about Biff- hes not lazy. Willy finds the need to contradict what he says as a fact. This man is in such a terrible place in life that he finds the need to contradict everything around him for no reason at all. On top of everything else when Willy finds out that Linda bought him an American cheese instead of Swiss cheese, Willy screams out why am I always being contradicted? The irony used by Arthur Miller makes the play funny since Willy feels that he is being contradicted when he is always contradicting others around him.
