Director
Indian Institute of Technology Patna is one of the new IITs established by an Act of Parliament in 2008. The city of Patna, the capital of the State of Bihar, has historical significance. It was a knowledge centre in the past which attracted visitors and scholars from many places all around the world. Some of the historical legends from this region include Lord Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Govind Singh, the famous astronomer Aryabhata and the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Currently IIT Patna has 3 schools with 7 departments, namely, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics in the School of Basic Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. IIT Patna offers B. Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Also it has started Ph. D programme in all seven disciplines mentioned above. IIT Patna is developing fast and would like to come up as an institute of excellence promoting intelligent, hard working and technically curious minds. We have already developed state-of-the-art infrastructure including classrooms and laboratories in imparting world class education. We have a wide range of research programmes, and many curricular and extra curricular events to ignite the minds of B.Tech students. In order to raise the quality of our education and research, we have already signed MoUs with three US universities and some more MoUs are in the process of finalization. A few B.Tech students visited USA last year in this connection. We are promoting exchange programmes with the best schools in the world, and also a large number of scientists and technologists have visited IIT Patna campus during the last two years. I envision developing this institute as one of the top institutes of overall education. We plan to train our students in various industries so that knowledge gained in the academic institute is fruitfully utilized. In this regard, I would welcome the industries in India and abroad to come forward and train our students so that they can be the future of India and the world at large and IIT Patna can produce competent engineers and scientists with good human values. I would also like to invite all prospective trainers and employers to visit IIT Patna and interact with our students and professors and assess the training and development programmes in IIT Patna. The Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IITP) is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of India in 2008 and has grown enormously during the last three years. It aims to produce high level scientists and technocrats for the necessity of the modern society. The Institute has 3 Engineering departments namely Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, along with basic departments for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities and Social Sciences. The Engineering departments offer B.Tech and Ph.D degrees. The rigorous entrance procedure ensures that IITs have the best of the country's brains. The flexible, wide and dynamic curriculum has led to the development of various branches of technology as per interest of students. Apart from regular courses, students are also engaged in various cultural, technical, sports and literary activities throughout the year. We have already developed a number of good modern high level laboratories for practical training of our students. IIT Patna has a sound academic curriculum. In addition to the regular semester based courses, students get opportunities to attend Conferences, Symposia, Workshops and Guest Lectures delivered by scholars and professionals who visit our campus round the year. Core Subjects and Electives


The students are offered with a wide range of electives in their own department as well as other departments of their choice to promote logical and innovative thinking amongst the students alongside with Core Subjects. Courses in Humanities and Social Sciences are also offered to the students to broaden the students' outlook towards the society. The courses tend to ignite the thought processes in the minds of the students through assignments, presentations and projects.

As a part of academics students are provided with hands-on training in the state of art laboratories in IIT Patna. This helps students get a practical realization of the various concepts involved in their courses.

Academics
Summer Internships
As a part of the curriculum, all of the pre-final year B.Tech students are supposed to undergo a summer internship in an Industry or a Research Organization. This enables the students to get a live exposure to the scenarios in the industry and also help them find motivations for their final year projects. These internships along with various industrial visits keep the students informed about the latest practices adopted by the industries. The students will be available for summer internships between May-July 2012. Recruitment for Summer Internship will start from September 2011. COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Computer Science and Engineering


The Computer Science & Engineering department aims to impart high quality education and provides research opportunities in all the major fields of the subject. The department comprises of experienced and energetic faculty who ensure that the students are provided with all the resources and guidance required in their pursuit in gaining knowledge and expertise. In addition, the wide range of science electives, humanities and social sciences electives help students to enhance their knowledge and improve their skills in other disciplines as well. The department maintains high standards of discipline and conduct. FACILITIES & LABORATORIES


At present the department has two computer (Software) Laboratories, each equipped with about 70 number of high-end PCs. The PCs are well connected with the LAN to the servers through SSH. The department has both the highend rack servers and blade servers. The hostels are connected with the wireless LAN facility. The Department has taken initiative to start a HardwareLaboratory to perform the Digital design and computer architecture laboratory and microprocessor interfacing courses also.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT


The essence of Computer Science lies in constant and systematic study of algorithmic processes, implementing computations and making computers and computations useful and easily usable by people across the world. Hence the department carries out extensive research in areas such as Network Bandwidth Management, Network Monitoring and Network Security, Mobile Computing, Adhoc Networks and Sensor Networks, Distributed Computing, Evolutionary Computing, Datamining, Graph Theory, Parallel Programming, Software Transactional Memory, Dynamic Distributed Systems, Peer-to-Peer Computing, Algorithm analysis, Networking algorithms, Lightweight Cryptography, Computer Security, Network Security. The department also undertakes numerous sponsored research projects, some of them are as follows Development of a system to identify, filter and traceback network security attacks using a new packet marking technique and Secure Routing in P2P networks using Gossip-based Protocols sponsored by Department of Information Technology, GoI and Correctness Criteria for Concurrent Executions of Nested Transactions in Transactional Memory Systems sponsored by NSERC, Canada.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
The students of Computer Science department undergo a heavy workload which include regular short term development projects, assignments and stifling competition throughtout their term. They are also required to undertake a research project in their final year under the guidance of a faculty member. The students are also encouraged to take part in programming and software design competitions and workshops in reputed institutions across India. The students have carried out relevant summer internships and research projects in global companies and universities around the globe such as research in logic for reasoning about kahneman and Tversky's prospect theory at LSU,Lousiana and Image Processing, abstract processing in machine learning at UH,Texas,USA.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Electrical Engineering
The Department of Electrical Engineering aims to impart high quality education and research in various disciplines of electrical engineering. The department caters to the ever challenging needs of technical excellence in all areas of electrical engineering such as Integrated electronics and circuits, Tele-communications, Computer technology, Control & Automation, Power systems & Power electronics. The department has wonderful pool of experienced and dynamic faculty who work round the clock to inculcate a spirit of inquisitiveness and innovation among their students. Due to this combined effort of the teachers and the students, electrical labs at IIT Patna never superannuate, brimming with enthusiastic students moulding their imagination and shaping it to a reality, be it mid-night or mid-day. The labs are fully equipped with the most modern equipments, comparable to the best facilities in their field. The department is truly global in its outlook and has numerous tie-ups with leading foreign universities helping students gain valuable professional and academic exposure through summer internships in leading companies and reputed universities abroad.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering aims at quality education by facilitating a sound foundation in theoretical fundamentals through a combination of good teaching environment and world class laboratory and computational facilities as well as providing valuable exposure to industrial and research practices through regular industry visits and inclusion of students in various research projects. The curriculum offers a wide array of electives in computer science, electronics and humanities contributing in the process of development of a multi skilled technocrat in accordance with the fast varying demands of the industry and the world. The department of Mechanical Engineering offers courses towards providing a strong foundation in theoretical, practical and design aspects of Mechanical Engineering. These courses strengthen the fundamentals and prepares the ground for application to real time scenarios in the world. Numerous tutorials , assignments and short-term projects in every course prepares the student for the same. A mechanical engineer is required in almost every area of industry and thus he needs to be multidimensionaland be receptive to ideas from all fields be it IT, management, electrical, electronics, civil or biomedics. To facilitate this inter disciplinary learning additional courses in Computer Fundamentals, C, OOP, Data Structures are also included in the curriculum to develop a sound background in programming and computing. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
The students of mechanical engineering are a dynamic lot pitching their talent and expertise in a myriad range of activities ranging from managing campus activities to participating in technical competitions in top colleges across India. To keep them on their toes the department encourages and abets their enthusiasm by organising regular seminars, workshops and guest lectures. Visits and tours to operational industries are organized on a regular basis to familiarize students with the operations and practices carried out in an industry. All students are required to undergo industrial training and carry out a research project in heir senior year. The students have also carried out impetus research in reputed institutes in India and abroad on topics like Dynamic System and Controls, Multiscale Modelling, Dielectric Elastomer Actuators, Stress Wave Force Balance on Missile heads and some under sponsors like DRDO and other central bodies.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT


The faculty of Mechanical Engineering dept. carry out research in a diverse range of topics like FEM, Computational Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, Micro-machining, Soft computing application in manufacturing, Modelling and Simulation of Manufacturing Processes, Biomedical robotics, Condition Monitoring, Smart materials , Mathematical modeling of turbulent flows, Multiphase and Interfacial problems: Drops and Bubbles, non-Newtonian fluids, Pulsating flows, Heat transfer, Two-phase fluid flow, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Clad Failure Analysis, Modelling and simulation of thermal systems, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Conventional and non-conventional machining, Welding, Soft Tissue Mechanics, Rotor Vibration Control, Continuum Mechanics, Heat transfer and Laser Material Processing. Many consultancy projects from reputed institutions like DRDO, DST, AERB, DMSRDE are underway in various stages.

Mechanical engineers unlike others need a lot of hands on experience in order to substitute their learning of theoretical fundamentals. Thus the department has the largest number of laboratories to cater to the students learning and research demands. The department has a Mechanical Workshop, IC Engine Lab, AD/CAM Lab, Heat transfer Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Robotics Lab, Material testing Lab, Metrology Lab, Advance manufacturing Lab, Machine Dynamics Lab and a Control Lab. These laboratories have state of art equipment, high precision instruments and central facilities like Micro Injection Moulding, Rheometer , Dynamic Mechanical Analyser, Data Acquisition System, CNC Machines, CNC Micro-machining Center, Computer Controlled Wind Tunnel, Reynolds Apparatus, Exhaust Gas Analyser and Smoke Meter.

The department of Physics was established to train undergraduate engineering students. The department runs a doctoral programme as well. Research in the department ranges across the exciting areas in Optics (theory & experiment), Theoretical studies in Nonlinear Optics and BoseEinstein condensate, Magnetic Nanomaterials, Ferroelectrics, and Organic Electronics. Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry was established since the setting up of the institute in 2008. The department started PhD program from July 2009. The faculty members of the department are committed to high quality of teaching and multidisciplinary research. At present department have two different laboratories providing the needs of the curriculum and research work include B-Tech Chemistry laboratory for freshmen B-Tech students and Chemistry Research laboratory for PhD students. B-Tech Chemistry laboratories is equipped with all necessary equipments required for 1st year B-Tech students. Chemistry Research laboratories includes Chemistry wet research laboratory and Chemistry instrument laboratory. In Chemistry wet research laboratory PhD students are doing all chemical reactions, synthesizing different new molecules etc. In Chemistry instrument laboratory different sophisticate instruments was installed and students are using these instruments to characterized different compounds. Currently the department has facilities like UV & Visible Spectrophotometer, FTIR, Spectrofluorometer, Digital Polarimeter, Particle size and zeta potential analyzer, Glove box, Viscometer, Millipore water purification system, Microwave reactor and Rotary evaporator and equipment like GC-MS, Electrophoresis systems, Gel documentation system, Transilluminator, PCR thermocycler, Vertical Laminar air flow device and CO2 incubators to be installed in the near future. The department carries out research in a wide range of topics like Supramolecular Chemistry, Coordination Chemistry, Total Synthesis of Biologically Important Natural Products, Pot Atom and Step Economic (PASE) Synthesis, Diversity Oriented Synthesis (DOS), Heterocyclic Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Methodologies, Nano-scale Materials, Green Chemistry, DNA self assembly for production of 3dimensional functional Nanostructures, Clustered DNA damage and DNA repair mechanism in Nucleosome core particles, Computational Chemistry, Instrumentation development, Microwave Spectroscopy, Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Chemical Dynamics and Physical and photophysical studies in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Currently the department has several research projects under its aegis like Construction of highly porous 3-D metal organic frameworks derived from triptycene-based organic linkers, Diversity oriented synthesis of privileged heterocycles & highly functionalized carbocycles by multicomponent reactions (MCRs), Fabrication of Highly Fluorescent Quantum Dots for Biomedical Applications and Design and Development of Multifunctional Organocatalysts for Asymmetric Synthesis sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, India.

Mathematics
Since its inception the department has taken lead role in high quality teaching and research. With a world class curricula the department nurtures undergraduate students in sound basic training in Mathematics and Statistics embracing the ever evolving needs of industry and academia. The department offers research program in various challenging fields of Mathematics and Statistics. The department is in its growing stage and keeps on flourishing under the leadership of the self-motivated faculty members who are actively engaged in various cutting edge research areas. The department offers courses at undergraduate and PhD level. The curricula is designed to cover several imperative topics in Mathematics and Statistics. Apart from compulsory courses the department is progressively involved in offering several elective courses at undergraduate level. The department offers some interdisciplinary courses at PhD level as well. Recently the department has developed a Computational Research Laboratory for faculty members and students to motivate the research areas which require high computing facilities. The faculty members of the department provide excellent training to the students at both undergraduate and PhD level. At undergraduate level theoretical discussion and tutorial evaluation are two significant components of a course.

The faculty members of the department are involved in high quality research in various fields of Mathematics and Statistics such as Number theory, Graph Theory, Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, Control Theory, Nonlinear Function Analysis, Optimization Techniques, Multiobjective Programming, Topology, Topological Graph Theory, Statistical Decision Theory, Bayesian Estimation. In present, the department has six research scholars who are working on these topics and are at various stages of their research work.

Humanities & Social Sciences


The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna is interdisciplinary in nature. As an integral part of an institute of national imminence, the departments objective is to properly orient engineering undergraduate students with the questions concerning society at large- local, national, and international level. It draws from the local, learn from the global and, yet, positions itself as G-local. The Department offers courses in English, Economics, Linguistics, and Sociology. Its faculty profile reflects the mandate of our unit. The faculty consists of erudite scholars with doctorates from renowned universities of the world like Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, University of Illinois, Patna University and McGill University, Montreal, and publications in national and international journals like The Journal of Labour Economics, Journal of Management and Public Policy, Journal of Intellectual Property Rights, Contemporary Discourse, Research- A Journal of English Studies, Sociological Bulletin, Adult Education and Development, and books such as Sociology of Globalization, and Media Literacy among others. The department aims at preserving its unique interdisciplinary focus by strengthening doctoral programs and research. Currently it has seven PhD students who have completed their prior degrees at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, Patna University, and the University of Delhi. It has established a Language Laboratory to train the students in language acquisition skills. The Social Sciences Research Laboratory is being completed while the Humanities and Social Science Resource Centre is fully functional. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences also hosts the bi-annual peerreviewed international journal titled Research and Practice in Social Sciences. The department has completed a project sponsored by UNICEF, and titled Knowledge Community on Children in India and is engaged in an external project with the University of British Columbia.

Nebula
A welcome bash organized by the senior students to welcome the incoming students every year in august, it is a fun filled evening with performances from the fresher's and seniors alike and the informal amalgamation of the new comer's into the IIT Patna family.

Celesta
This is the Annual Technology Week Conducted by the students of IIT Patna. During this time many internal competitions are conducted and the students compete amongst themselves in various events.

Reverberance
A gala evening filled with fun and frolic with cultural performances by the students, it is an opportunity to relax and unwind the students and faculties from all the stress in the middle of the semester.

This is the Annual Techno-Cultural Fest conducted by the students of IIT Patna. This is conducted in the first weekend of February every year. Anwesha sees a huge participation of students from colleges across the nation. And it is the biggest fest of its kind held in India. Seminars and Guest Lectures by many renowned Individuals also take place during this time.

Sports
Sports are a vital part of development for any individual as they contribute to physical fitness, drive for excellence and develop the team spirit and leadership qualities. The students compete amongst themselves in Inter Hall Sports Competitions and Inter IIT Sports Competitions. And our students have participated in majority of the events in the last Inter IIT Sports Meet held in Delhi.

IIT Patna makes active efforts in promoting Research and Development through the Courses run by the various departments and sponsored programs funded by national organizations and industries

Academic Research Programs:


All B. Tech and Ph.D. students undergo a project under the guidance of a faculty in the institution. These include basic application and development research oriented projects. These projects provide students and faculties with an opportunity to tackle live problems and pursue research in their respective fields of interest.

Sponsored Research
National Organizations and Industries may sponsor specific projects of research by funding the projects undertaken by the faculties. Industrial Consultancy provides faculty and staff of the institute to undertake specific projects for the industry, which may include project design, testing and evaluation or even training in new areas of industrial development. These programs help to bridge the academicindustry gap.

Student Projects
These constitute the research being undertaken by the individual faculties or specific research groups in each of the departments and also between various departments running academic programs. Research is also carried out by the research scholars under the guidance of the faculties in their respective departments.

Many prominent visitors like Dr. P K Sinha (Co-Founder of the Z S Associates, USA), Dr. U N Singh (Cheif Technologist at NASA), Dr. R Krishnamoorti (Associate Dean of the University of Houstan), Dr. T Ramasami (Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi), Dr. Ranjan Jana (Professor at the University of Utah) and many other have visited IIT Patna and delivered special lectures and interacted with the students and faculties.

Student Gymkhana
The Student Gymkhana consists of elected representatives who head and manage the various activities conducted by the students. The Vice President Heads the Student Gymkhana; he is assisted by four General Secretaries namely Welfare, Technical Affairs, Cultural and Sports. Science and Technology Council


The Science and Technology Council organizes various workshops, seminars and competitions in the areas like Robotics, Programming, Electronics, CAD etc to name a few. This is also responsible for organizing the technical week Celesta. The Science and Technology Council has the following clubs under it: > Astronomy Club > Robotics Club > Maths Club > Programmers Club > Electronics Club

Cultural Club
This club manages all the cultural aspects in the campus like celebrating various festivals, organizing competitions in music and dance. It also conducts shows of the campus bands and dance talents.

Literary Club
The Club organizes activities to develop and show case literary talents in the institute by organizing debates, elocutions and various other such competitions. The members of this club have won debates organized by reputed institutions around the country.

Eco Club
This club aims to create awareness among the residents of the campus by conducting various competitions and programs. This club also makes sure that the campus is green and environmentally sound.

IIT Patna is running from its makeshift campus as the permanent campus is coming up in Bihta. The Central Library at IIT Patna provides access to many volumes of books and online access to a huge number standard journals. Students have facilities for playing Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tennis, Foot Ball, Badminton, Cricket, Table Tennis etc on the campus with coaches for training. Computing facilities provide state of the art simulation and CAD facilities. The students are provided with High Speed internet on campus for constantly staying updated with the latest information.
