David Owen LNG 405 13 September 2011 Annotated Bibliography For my senior project, I am intrigued to research the function of religion in todays society and the invincible barrier it leaves between people and their personal relationships. In order to begin my quest, I will research the history of the concept of religion as a whole and how it came about to today and the history of human interaction as well and how religion plays into it. I am specifically interested in this area of research because not only will it open up the concept behind my personal belief, but many others as well. Moreover, I would like to investigate the concept and function of religion with other cultures in society as well to receive a well rounded view of the articulation of the function of religion in todays society. He believes that religion is more difficult to explain than evolution because religion is more over a concept rather than a set in stone reality. He considers religion as a symbol system that evolved into many different types of systems today. This article also gives good interpretation of other religions and their cultures traditions. This article discusses the natural history of religion and the primitive effects it has brought forth in todays culture and society. The studies done imply that primitive civilizations disperse themselves according to their religion and dialect which is an aspect that can be compared even still today. It also reveals the concept of the Supreme Being and how it came as a topic in many religions today. Handbook of Religion and Health. Oxford: Oxford UP, 2001. Print. The authors of the Handbook of Religion and Health clarify the idea of religion and its relationship to a persons health today. They took a survey that reported that eighty-two percent of persons over sixty-five are members of a religious congregation which means that their health should be in correlation to their faith as well. This article depicts an opinion that states that religion has been excluded from the transitional framework of society. It also states that the function of religion is now more on an explicit and personal level whereas people are able to connect more on a personal and spiritual quest to finding that Ultimate Being. In Mesopotamian societies, there were many religious sects and ceremonies. This religious setup gave way to many different types of cultures today. Postgate also discusses the relationships formed between civilizations within a whole society. These relationships set up many religious principles of primitive times. Amussen, Susan Dwyer. Amussen discusses the social hierarchies and relationships of people in the seventh centuries. These relationships helped to form communities which helped to form religious groups in societies. Many societies broke off from the institution of the Catholic teachings of the century which led to Puritist. A puritists religion would have been like an atheist in todays culture but back then. Rorty mentions John Locke in his essay and the comparative elements of his concept of trust and religion. Rorty also discusses the historical mindset of people in the century of John Locke and how religion functioned as an institution of beliefs. This essay also brings up many ideas of John Locke and compares them to todays society and culture. Rorty uses the proper resources also. Sessions, William Lad. Google Books. He questions Is there somehow one concept that unite all faiths? Sessions also give historical background where he tells of Western and Eastern traditions of the practice of faith. He believed that both paid close attention to the idea of self rather than individuals as a whole.

Religion and Philosophy are two similar things but different as well. Today, we include science under Philosophy and faith or belief under Religion. This article mentions that both are essentially focused on the advent of the spirit with a person. Davenport, Frederick M. Google Books. Kessinger Publishing. Web. 9 Sept. 2011. <http://books.google.com/books?hl=en>. This articles discusses he mental development and the conscious of feeling, thinking, and acting together when worshiping a specific faith. The author came up with the idea of like-mindedness which is developed internally when choosing a religion that expresses your personal belief. Davenport also discusses primitive traditions and traits in earlier societies and their religious revivals as well. This article gives appropriate evidence as well.
