b. Describe (in words) the steps required to factor the polynomial 2 x3 3x 2 5x 4 . (Page 101 # C3) Let b represent the factors of the constant term 4, which are 1,-1,2,-2,4,-4 Let a represent the factors of the leading coefficient 2, which are 1,-1,2,-2 The possible values of b/a are 1,-1,2,-2,4,-4,1/2 and -1/2. Test the values b/a for x to find the zeros. The zero is 1. The corresponding factor is x-1. Then divide the polynomial by the factor x-1 giving quotient Factor the quotient : .

2.

Describe what is meant by a root, a zero, and an x-intercept. How are they related? (Page 109 #C1)

3.

i. Describe the connection between the solution to a polynomial inequality x 4 4 x 3 3x 2 2 x 2 and thegraph of the corresponding function.

iii.

Find the solution of the inequality.

4.

If the Rational Zero Theorem determines a list of possible x-intercepts, how can it make sense sometimes for none of them to be correct values for the x-intercepts? Discuss.
