Introduction of Methane Gas

Methane is the first and Simplest Hydrocarbon. The Molecular Formula of

Mehane is CH4. Methane Gas is Formed naturally under varying circumstances.
Natural Gas is produced inside the Earth’s crust by the Decomposition of
Organic matter under geological conditions.This process is Completed by
Anaerobic Bacteria. Methane is the Chief Constituent of Natural Gas. Methane is
also present in Marshy Lands. Methane is a colorless, odorless gas with a wide
distribution in nature. It is the principal component of natural gas, a mixture
containing about 75% CH4, 15% ethane (C2H6), and 5% other hydrocarbons,
such as propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10).
 Principal of Methane Gas

The principal use of methane is as a fuel. The combustion of methane is

highly exothermic.

CH4(g) + 2 O2(g) CO2(g) + 2 H2O(l) H = –891 kJ

Chemical Properties
In the chemical industry, methane is a raw material for the manufacture of
methanol (CH3OH), formaldehyde (CH2O), nitromethane (CH3NO2), chloroform
(CH3Cl), carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), and some freons (compounds containing
carbon and fluorine, and perhaps chlorine and hydrogen).

Prepration of Methane Gas

Procedure of Methane Gas:-

Methane is Prepared in Labortory by Heating Anhydrous Sodium Acetate with

Soda Lime.

Chemical Equation:-

CH3 CoONa + NaOH = CH4 + Na2Co3

 USES OF METHANE GAS
• Methane is used as a clean fuel for heating at home as well
as Industries.
• It is used extensively for running automobiles especially
Buses,Cars and Auto Rikshaw.
• Cylinder are fitted in Automobiles by using Methane.
• It is used in making Carbon Black.

PROPERTIES OF METHANE GAS

• Methane is Colourless Gas.

• It is non-Piosoness.
• It is lighter than Air.
• It is insoluble in water.
