MOISTURE RELATION & TESTING:

Moisture regain: Moisture regain is defined as the weight of water in a material

expressed as percentage of the oven dry wet of the material.
OR,
The ratio of water in a material to the oven dry wet of the material is called
moisture regain (M.R.).
Let, oven dry wet of material = D
Weight of water in that material = W
Regain% = R

So, R= W
D ×100%

Moisture Content: Moisture content is defined as the weight of water in a material

expressed as percentage of total weight of the material.
OR,
The ratio of water in a material to the total weight of the material is called
moisture content.
Let, Oven dry wet of material = D
Weight of water in that material = W
Moisture content = C
So, moisture content, M.C. = DW +W ×100%

Relation between M.R. & M.C.:

The ratio of water in a material to the oven dry wet of the material is called
moisture regain (M.R.).

The ratio of water in a material to the total weight of the material is called
moisture content.

From definition, M.R.= W

D ×100%
⇒ R. = W
D ×100%
⇒D= W
R ×100%

And M.C. = W
W +D ×100%
⇒ C. = W
W +D ×100%
W ×100%
⇒ C. = W + W ×100
R
100 W
⇒ C. = W ( 1+100 )
R

100 R
⇒ C. = R +100

100 R
Again, C. = R +100

⇒ R×C + 100C = 100R

⇒ 100R – RC = 100C
⇒ R(100-C) = 100C
100 C
⇒ R = 100 −C

Correct Invoice Weight: The weight obtained after adding standard moisture regain
to the oven dry weight is called correct invoice weight (CIW). It is also called
conditioned weight.
So, CIW = Oven Dry Weight + Standard Moisture Regain

Let, C = the oven dry weight of a material

W= the total weight of a material
d = the oven dry weight of a sample
S = original weight of the sample

∴ C = dS ×W
And CIW = C× ( 100100+ R ), where R is the official allowance for moisture.
This CIW value is for dried out without cleaning. But for dried out after cleaning,
CIW = C× ( 100+100R + A+ B
),
where, R+A+B= total allowance for moisture, natural grease, wax, fatty matter,
oil etc.
P1
For blended materials, P2
Say, R1 = Regain for P1
R 2 = Regain for P 2

So, Allowance = P1× R1 + P 2× R 2

100 100

= P1R1+ P 2 R 2
100

= X (say)

So, CIW = C ( 100100+ X )
