Energy saving measures in Pumps

Pumps
A pump is a device used to move fluids. A pump displaces a volume by physical or

mechanical action. Pumps basically fall in the category of dynamic and displacement pumps.

Types of Pumps
Dynamic Pumps

Centrifugal Special effect pumps

Displacement Pumps

Rotary Reciprocating

Centrifugal Pumps
Very simple design Two main parts are the impeller and the

diffuser Impellers
Bronze poly carbonate cast iron
stainless steel

Advantages of centrifugal Pump

Very efficient Produce smooth and even flow Reliable with good service life

Disadvantages
Loss of priming easily Efficiency depends upon operating design

head & speed.

Reciprocating Pumps
They operate by using reciprocating piston. They are self priming. They can be designed for delivering high

pressures.

Advantages of Recp pumps

They are very efficient. They are suitable for very high heads at low

flows. Pump offers reliable discharge flow.

Disadvantages of Recp pump

These pumps are not tolerant to solid

particles. They deliver high pulsed flow. For smooth flow additional features such as accumulators have to be provided.

Energy conservation opportunities in pumping

Operate pump near best efficiency point. Replace old pumps by energy efficient

pumps Provide booster pump for few areas of higher head.

Energy conservation opportunities in pumping

Conduct water balance to minimize water

consumption. Ensure availability of instruments like pressure gauges, flow meters. Operate pumpset during non-peak hours.
