The Others – The New Director’s version

1. The tittle
The tittle “The Others” refers to a family; Grace (mother), Anne and Nicholas
(children); that lives in a country house at Jersey.

2. The Setting
To enhance a horror atmpsphere, Almenábar, use elements like the big house, the
garden, the forest, the fog and the music ( a very important element).
In concret, I wouldn’t add any more element/s because it’s a psychological film, so,
we don’t need blood and kill schenes like from a typical horror film.

3. The Time
The film was set in 2001 at Spain, France and United States. But the film took
place after the second World War.
The director show it from the actor dresses and also Grace sayed some sentences
from the second World War.

4. The Cast

Grace:
She feel sad because she have lost here husband (he was at he front of the second
World War). But his children give her strenght.
She educate her children strict but with a lot of love. The children accept Grace’s
conditions.
She isn’t mad but she’s strict. She have a special personality, for her, al the thing
must be perfect.

Anne and Nicholas:

The children have a serious light allergy. The consequence ist that the kids have a
very white skin.
They must live always in the darkness (but they can live with candle light). In the
house are plenty of windows, so, all the windows must be closed with large
courtains.

Mrs Mills, Mr Tutle and Lydia:

Mrs Mills is an anging nanny, Mr Tutle is an elderly gardener and Lydia is an
young mude servant.

Alejandro Amenábar:
The cabeza (1991), Himenóptero (1992), Luna (1995), Tesis (1996), Virtual
Nightmare-Open your eyes (1997) and Mar Adentro (2004).
The film won: eight Goyas, the Kansas City Film Critics as best actress (Nicole
Kidman) and also has won three times the Saturn Award.
5. FINAL QUESTION
The fim “The Others” can be considered a representive of Gothic fiction because
ghotic fiction is an genre that combines elements of horror and romance: horror are
the ghosts (the housekeepers and the family) and romance are a story that could be
“real”.
