To understand the basic characteristics of power semiconductor switches. To know the requirements of the drivers for power semiconductor switches.

The description of the generic converter topologies that are used in most applications. Analysis and design of digital and analogic circuits for the control of power converters. The study of protection technics for power devices. The design of heatsink in power electronics applications.

Detailed program: Chapter 1: Introduction to Power Electronics Overview of power converters and its applications. Analysis of power electronics circuits. Overview of power devices. Design of heat sink in power electronics applications.

Chapter 2: Line-Frequency Phase-Controlled Rectifiers. Power devices used in rectifiers: Power diodes: I/V and switching characteristics, types, losses,.. Power thyristors: I/V and switching characteristics, types, losses, trigger circuits... The triac: I/V characteristics. The GTO: I/V and switching characteristics, trigger circuits... Series and Parallel operation of devices. Protection of devices. DC motors: electrical and mechanical characteristics, equivalent circuit, control of DC motors with a separately excited field winding. Converter topologies and control circuits: Single-phase half-wave bridge rectifier: current and voltage armature waveforms, devices characteristics,... Single-phase full-wave bridge rectifier: current and voltage armature waveforms, devices characteristics,... Phase-control of rectifiers: block diagram, integrated circuits for phase control, types of firing signals, ... Chapter 3: DC Choppers. Power devices in DC Choppers: The Power Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT): I/V and switching characteristics, types, losses, driver circuits... The power MOSFET: I/V and switching characteristics, types, losses, driver circuits... The IGBT: I/V and switching characteristics, types, losses, driver circuits... Topologies and control of DC Choppers: Introduction: step-down chopper with RLE load, power control, regenerative brake control and rheostatic brake control. One-Quadrant Chopper drive. Two-Quadrant Chopper drive. Four-Quadrant Chopper drive. Integrated circuits for DC Choppers: Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) block diagram. Chapter 4. Switches Mode Power Supplies (SMPS).
