Virtual Surgery Environment Virtual Surgery Environment: Virtual surgery refers to a virtual reality based simulation of surgical procedures including laparoscopic surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, breast reduction,
geometry. These simulations are used to practise often dangerous surgical procedures without the need for an actual patient. The virtual surgery provides surgeons the capabilities to practise surgery on a virtual patient before performing the real surgery. Informatics and Virtual Reality Group, in partnership with clinicians from the NHS West Midlands, are developing a Virtual Surgery Environment (VSE) for laparoscopic surgery. We are keen to develop with you a proof of concept with models of liver and liver tumours utilising your know how of multi-modal virtual environments. This proof of concept will allow us to have better understanding of the potential of such environments in training of new surgeons as well as for experienced surgeons to practice complicated surgeries. - FT Lam, Consultant Surgeon, Divisional Medical Director for Surgery, University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.
