Electronic devices (mobiles, calculators, ...) are NOT allowed. Each question
counts 5 points.

1. Let V = F (N, R). A sequence {xn } ∈ V is periodic if there exists k ∈ N

such that xn = xn+k for all n ∈ N. For example u = {7, 2, 7, 2, 7, 2, . . . } and
v = {3, 9, −4, 3, 9, −4, . . . } are periodic sequences.
(a) Show that u + v is a periodic sequence.
(b) Prove that W = {x ∈ V : x is periodic} is a subspace of V .

2. Let V = R and put A = ,B= , and C = .
1 1 1 0 0 3
(a) Determine whether C belongs to span{A, B}.
(b) Given that W = {x ∈ V : xT = x} has dimension 3, prove that {A, B, C} is
a basis for W .

3. Suppose v1 , v2 , v3 , v4 , v5 , v6 are linearly independent vectors in a vector space V ,

and put S1 = {v1 , v2 , v3 } and S2 = {v4 , v5 , v6 }. Prove that

span(S1 ) ∩ span(S2 ) = {0}.

4. Let T : R2×3 → P7 (R) be a linear transformation.

(a) State the definitions of the null space and range of T .
(b) State the definitions of the nullity and rank of T .
(c) State the Dimension Theorem.
(d) If T is one-to-one, find the nullity and rank of T ?
(e) Explain why it is impossible for T to be onto.
