TO: Megan Hickey, CBS Chicago

FROM: Dr. Robert Schiffbauer, Superintendent

SUBJECT: Student Discipline

Ms. Hickey,

Thank you for your email today. Please see the following responses to your questions:

— Was the student punished in this incident? What was the punishment?

Response: The district is not at liberty to share records of student discipline for a particular student per
the Illinois School Student Records Act (105 ILCS 10/1).

— Why weren't the parents contacted by the school when the first complaint was made on Nov. 3?

Response: Again, the district is not at liberty to share records of student discipline for a particular
student per the Illinois School Student Records Act (105 ILCS 10/1).

— What is the school's policy on allegations of racial harassment?

Response: The district takes all allegations of racial harassment very seriously. Board policies 7:20 and
7:180 outline the Board of Education policies on racial harassment. Furthermore, the policies are
reiterated in the student handbook. The Board policies and handbook can be found on the district’s
website www.mchs.net.

— In 2021, we reported that Minooka Community High School District 111 settled a lawsuit with a
former student alleging that a racist threat was made against him in 2019. Did that case impact the way
the district handles these types of allegations in any way?

Response: Again, the district takes all allegations of racial harassment seriously. The district has
numerous programs in place to educate our students on the importance of being kind to each other and
treating each other with respect:

TALK Day (Teens Activating the Language of Kindness) is a day-long program run completely by
student leaders, aims to break down barriers between peer groups, and allows students a safe, judgment
free environment to be themselves and teach students that they are not alone in their struggles.

Student Athletics and Activities Leadership Team (S.A.A.L.T.) - The goal of S.A.A.L.T. is to develop
leadership skills with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion for our athletic teams and activity
members.

Allies in Diversity - The Allies in Diversity student club was created to fight hatred, inequality, and
bigotry. The club aims to educate students about social justice, equity, multiculturalism, and diversity.
They engage in discussions about problems that need to be addressed as well as brainstorm different
solutions to those problems to help effect change in our school and community.

Connections Crew - The goal is to bring freshmen and upperclassmen together through mentoring and
connections, while building a community of an inviting culture where students feel a part of the MCHS
family.

Mutual Respect and Understanding Training - Students who are disciplined in specific instances must
attend a training that reinforces mutual respect and understanding of their peers.

Diversity and Equity Institute Day Training - All staff have been trained and we have partnered with the
Erica Walker Thomas Group.

Various student leadership opportunities are offered for all of our students and reflect the diversity of our
district.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert Schiffbauer
