ED 396 Lesson Plan for Video Topic: Noun Clause High School Sophomores

Goal(s):
English: L.6.1e. Recognize variations from standard English in their own and others writing and speaking, and identify and use strategies to improve expression in conventional language.

Objective(s): :
The students will use the information provided in previous lessons to understand what a noun clause is and how to find it in a sentence. They will then take their understanding of the definition of a noun clause and look at a piece of popular music, their task will be to determine what the noun clauses are in the Lionel Richie song, Hello.

Assessment:
The students will be assessed by the completion of their worksheet in which they will be asked to underline the noun clauses that are provided in the song. This will allow me as the teacher to understand if they truly know what the students have learned about noun clauses and whether or not they are able to grasp this grammar concept.

Warm Up/Group Discussion: As a group we will go over different forms of noun clauses: These are the kinds of noun clauses found in this song: Question word followed by subject and verb I wonder how you are. Question word followed by infinitive You know just what to do. Beginning with that (that can also be omitted) Is it me (that) youre looking for?

Noun clauses can be used in the same roles as nouns: the subject of a verb, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition. Demonstration: As a class we will go through some sample questions that will help students identify the different types of noun clauses: o Subject of the Verb: What Grace did shocked her sister. He said that he was angry. The scariest thing about me is that I get mad easily. The talk was about what Pam did. o Object of the Verb: o Subject Complement: o Object of a Preposition: Within this demonstration I will remind the students that there are key words to look for when identifying a noun clause. The words to look for are as follows: However How That If Whatever What When Wherever Where Whether Whichever Which Whom Who Whose Whomever Why

Activity: Once the students understand how to identify a noun clause we will then look at a piece of modern music to see how these different noun clauses can be found in our everyday life. We will focus on the song Hello written and sung by Lionel Richie. The students will each receive the lyrics. The first time we watch the video they will just pay attention to the melody and follow along. Then the second time I will ask them to closely read their lyrics while the song is playing and if they notice a noun clause to raise their hand. I will remind them to focus on the clue words to help them identify the noun clauses included in the song. Individual Work Time: Once we have gone through the song the students will have time to go through the rest of the worksheets either on their own or with a partner. If the class still does not understand the concept of a noun clause we will go through it as a class however everyone will be required to participate thus allowing for informal assessment of how the class as a whole has learned the content and whether or not this subject should be taught again the following day. Closure: I will ask the students if they can remember the different type of noun clauses and if they can tell me some of the clue words to look for when identifying one. This will once again reemphasis information they have already learned however instead of me telling it to them, they will be asked to tell it to me.

Focus on Student with Special Needs:


When designing this lesson the primer way to reach out to my students was through music. I noticed that a lot of my students listen to their own music when the teachers are giving their lesson so instead I used music as a learning tool for the entire class. The use of music helped calm the classroom setting and made the activity interesting for the students.
