Class proposal
By: Juanita Cobos Franco
Diverse English

When it comes to teaching, it is impossible not to have a position on how the student should
be taught a class, since every teacher has their own beliefs and opinions on the student’s
learning process and the tools that benefit from those. However, as a teacher, I believe that
we are the ones that must adapt to the students interests in topics and methodologies, as
well as their english level. Hopefully, I will get the chance to learn about the methodological
and theoretical proposal of Diverse English.

With this task given, I put myself 10 years in the past when I was 12 years old to remember
what I was taught at school and what stayed most vividly in my memory. Therefore, my
class proposal includes the song “Lemon Tree” that until this day I remember all the lyrics
because they are easy to understand. This proposal consists in: listening to the song, filling
the gaps, underlying unknown words, watching an animated video of the song so the student
can understand in another way the meaning of the lyrics and the unknown words such as
nouns and adjectives, with the support of writing down and example of each word. And
finally, singing the song to improve pronunciation.

● Moment 1: Firstly, It is important to make clear that I will avoid speak spanish as
much as possible. In order to learn a noun, adjective or verb, I will rely on pictures,
sentences or even mimics. Once I say hello and introduce myself, I will have a brief
conversation with the student about what she has been learning, and her interests.

● Moment 2: I will tell the student that for the lesson of the day will be filling the lyrics
gaps of a song called “Lemon Tree” by Fool’s Garden. This is chosen with the
purpose of improving listening skills, learn new words, and if possible, start getting
familiar about pronouns and present continuous. First of all, I will tell her that the
song will be played the first time without the exercise so she can pay close attention
to the lyrics to see if she can catch some words (get familiar with the song) Then I will
pass her a sheet with the lyrics with some gaps on.

I'm sitting here in the boring room

It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I'm wasting my time
I got nothing to do
I'm hanging around
I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder
I'm driving around in my car
I'm driving too fast
I'm driving too far
I'd like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely
I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning, turning, turning, turning, turning around
And all that I can see is just another lemon tree
Sing!
Dap-dadada-dadpm-didap-da
Dadada-dadpm-didap-da
Dap-didili-da
I'm sitting here
I miss the power
I'd like to go out taking a shower
But there's a heavy cloud inside my head
I feel so tired
Put myself into bed
Well, nothing ever happens and I wonder
Isolation is not good for me
Isolation, I don't want to sit on the lemon tree
I'm stepping around in the desert of joy
Baby, anyhow I'll get another toy
And everything will happen and you wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just another lemon tree
I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning, turning, turning, turning, turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
And I wonder, wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky
And all that I can see
And all that I can see
And all that I can see
Is just a yellow lemon tree

● Moment 3: After two or three plays, I will ask the student to choose five unknown
words and underline them in red color, and another five know words in yellow color.

● Moment 4: The video “Lemon Tree Animation”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=VaExN-H5vCc will be played and a short conversation about her opinions on the
animation and whether it helped her understanding the lyrics. If the student has some
blanks left, the video will be played again so she can finish filling all the blanks. Later,
the teacher will try to explain with examples or images the words that are still
unknown to the student. The teacher will ask whether she wants to know the
meaning of another word besides the five that were previously explained. The
student will take note of the words with an drawing or a sentence.

● Moment 5: Finally, It is important to sing the song and correct mispronunciations.

● As homework, if she’s interested, I will ask the student to look for images on google
of another five unknown words I will give her and doing a sentence with them.
