The Talmud consists of oral law (the Mishnah) cited by the Rabbis and edited in written form about 200 CE plus several centuries of added commentary (Gemarah) edited into written form between 500 and 600 CE. A Talmud was compiled both in Babylonia and in Jerusalem. The former is viewed as more authoritative.
