Low-German and Scandinavian languages

- By year 1000, English consisted from about 40


000 words and was spoken about 1 million
people

- Nowadays English consists from about 800 000


words and is spoken by a little over 1 billion
people

- About 4000 new words enter the English


language each year

became independent, they chose to
belong to the British Commonwealth and
English is spoken all over the
Commonwealth as a native or official
language.
• English started being used in
diplomacy in 1919 when the President
of the USA, President Wilson,
succeeded having the Treaty of
Versailles written in English as well as
in French and German

• 80% of world’s electronically stored information is in
English
• ¾ of world’s mail is in English
• There are 40 million internet users in the world, 80% of
them communicate in English
• There are 82 English speaking countries
• In 8 of them English is the only language
• “Computer”, “television”, “sport” and “film” come from
English language and have spread worldwide
• More than 1/3 of English words comes from French
