ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA) OF A CONSTRUCTED DAM ON

CHOGHAKHOR WETLAND IN CHAHARMAHAL & BAKHTYARI –IRAN

Abstract

Choghkhor is one of the important water ecosystems in chaharmahal & bakhtiyari

province which is located among Zagros Mountains.
In 1991 in order to provide water supply for agricultural purposes a dam was
constructed. After enterprise of the dam the wetland basin increased from 960 to
1400 hectare.
This paper provides an overview on choghakhor wetland ecosystem and discusses
threats faced by a constructed dam. Matrix method was used for environmental
impact assessment (EIA) of the dam and Importance of environmental impact
assessment before conducting a developing project is discussed. Absence of
wetland policy, conflicting sectoral policies on issue, limited information and
awareness on the values of wetlands contribute to degradation of choghakhor
wetland.
