THE BIODIVERSITY OF TIMBER TREE AND FRUIT SPECIES ALONG


THE EDGE OF KAYAN RIVER, BULUNGAN, EAST KALIMANTAN

Abstract

Kayan river is a major river in Bulungan, East Kalimantan. This river was inhabited
and dominated by dayak tribe as indegenous people. River plays an important role in
their daily activities, so that they erect the traditional house along the river. A study
of biodiversity of timber tree and fruit species was conducted along the edge of
Kayan river. This study was done on October-December 2005. The data were gained
by exploring along the edge of Kayan river from mouth until upper reaches of river by
speedboat. All targeted plants recorded and documented. While all unknown plants
were sampled and described, then identified in the laboratory. There were five
species of timber tree and sixteen fruit species were recorded in the study area, with
benuang bini (Octomeles sumatrana) as the dominant timber tree, and kelapa
(Cocos nucivera) as the common species in the dayak village, as well as pisang
(Mimosa sp.) as the common species in unirrigated field.
