HUMAN ACTIVITIES AFFECTING THE FUNCTION AND VALUES OF BAND ALI

Abstract

Band –Ali –Khan wetland located in southern Tehran is a seasonal fresh water
wetland is highly important for protection of native and migratory bird species.This
wetland acts as a drinking water supply reservoir, nesting ground nursing and
feeding ground for the native and migratory birds. In this study the effect of 3 main
human activities of urban sewage, industrial waste water and agriculture are studied
and their role on wetland function and values are evaluated.
The values were biodiversity and recreation and the functions were ground water
discharge, flood flow alteration and sediment/toxicant retention.
Urban swage detected as a major threat to the wetland and some recommendations
had given to prevent lose of wetland in near future.
