MODERN FUNCTION NOTATION

By: Caitlin Cellier And Emily Proudfoot

EARLY APPEARANCES OF FUNCTIONS

Babylonian Mathematics (1800-1600 BC)

Algebraic Mathematics based on Geometry Trimetric Functions Early understanding of concepts without proofs or formulas

NICOLE ORESME
1323-1382 Medieval Ages

Developed loose theories with ideas about independent and dependent variables Influenced future mathematicians and their ideas

REN DESCARTES
1596-1650 Renaissance Clearly developed a theory on the relationship of two variables over a curve

Developed the Cartesian coordinate axis Represented a function as a graph

LEJEUNE DIRICHLET

1805 - 1859

1837 - Created the Modern Definition of a Function

Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet Images: (Lejeune Dirichlet)

If a variable y is so related to a variable x that whenever a numerical value is assigned to x, there is a rule according to which a unique value of y is determined, then y is said to be a function of the independent variable x.
