Discussions on Writing and Literature by the UHH English Faculty

Wednesday, November 9th, Dr. Jennifer Wheat will present:

Never Turn your Back on the Ocean

(nor on Creeks, Pools and Rivers): Wild Swimming as Eco-activism
Dr. Wheat will facilitate an interactive discussion on peoples experiences with water, drawing from several writers who have taken a stand for healthy water systems by swimming through them and writing about their heightened understanding of aquatic ecosystems. These writers include Roger Deakin, author of Waterlog, which chronicles his swims throughout lakes, rivers, and seas of Britain, and Akiko Busch, author of Nine Ways to Cross a River, which calls attention to the pleasures and perils of river swimming in America. Dr. Wheat will discuss her own experience as an ocean swimmer, contrasting lived experience with some romanticized literary notions of swimming, oceans and identity. She is currently exploring ways to generate greater understanding of water issues among the students she teaches as she develops a water-based environmental literature class.

Wednesday, November 9th from 1:00 to 2:00 Campus Center Private Dining Room
