    INVITATION Addressing Desertification by Efficient Irrigation in Agriculture.

    The Cyprus Organic Farmers Association and the DESIRAS project partners invite you to attend the presentation seminar of their pilot project titled: DESIRAS - Addressing Desertification by Efficient Irrigation in Agriculture. Which has been approved for funding by the European Commissions Directorate-General for Environment under the Desertification 2009-2010 - Open Call for Proposals. Presentations at this event will outline the following: Testing of an innovative technology for its practical effect in addressing desertification in Southern Europe. How reduction in water consumption, achieved by utilizing innovative technologies for data analysis instead of relying only on experience, can reach an impressive 45%. Based on weather forecasts and software models, the technology used determines when conditions are favorable for diseases or insects and thereby pinpoints the optimum time for using pesticide, achieving a reduction of spraying by around 35%. Considering that water used in agriculture (of which 87% is used for irrigation) reaches 80% of total consumption in Spain and 63% (of which 93% for irrigation) in Cyprus, the potential benefits of wide implementation of these technologies are enormous.
