GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE

CHANGE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
To understand the causes of global warming and global climate change. To understand the difference between the greenhouse effect and the enhanced greenhouse effect.

GAME
Quickly get into groups of three. Decide on an order for each of you 1,2 and 3. The first person comes up and has 20 seconds to look at an image. You then need to return to your group and start to recreate the image The second person comes up and does the same, going back to the group to try and continue the recreation of the image The third person does the same.

GOOD LUCK

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The greenhouse effect is GOOD for our planet. Without the greenhouse effect the earth would be approximately 30C colder!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Approximately 50% of the suns rays reach the earths surface (thinkwhere does the other 50% go?). These rays are known as shortwave radiation. This energy heats up the earths surface. The surface then emit energy known as longwave radiation. The longwave radiation is absorbed by a blanket of greenhouse gases (water vapour, CO2, methane and ozone). The atmosphere is kept 30C above what it would be without these gases.

GREENHOUSE GASES
By

their percentage contribution to the greenhouse effect on Earth the four major gases are: water vapor, 3670% carbon dioxide, 926% methane, 49% ozone, 37%

TASK

Using the information on the previous two slides draw a diagram to show the natural greenhouse effect.

THINK!

Why is it called the greenhouse effect?

ENHANCED GREENHOUSE EFFECT

Humans have released significantly more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than are naturally found. (we will look at statistics later) What impact do you think this has on the greenhouse effect?

TASK

What activities are humans doing to input more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere?
