Faithfully following God according to His Timing

(Matt. 1:18-21, 24-25, 2:13-15, 19-21, 23)

We know that God examined Mary’s heart in choosing her to be the mother of Jesus. Do
you think he also examined Joseph’s heart? If so, what did he find there? (Do you think
this is kind of like our seeking guardians for our children in our wills, asking another to
love, care for, protect, guide, encourage, etc. those whom we care most about?)

Mercy

Joseph demonstrated mercy in regard to Mary (Matt. 1:19)

Mercy is associated with Righteousness (Ps. 112:4)

Faithfulness

Joseph was declared “righteous” by his faith, which he demonstrated by his

obedience (Matt. 1:24, 2:14, 2:21, Luke 2:21)

Joseph did not run ahead of God or lag behind.

Obedience can be a protection from harm (e.g. going to Egypt to avoid Herod)

Do you think Joseph was confused by Mary’s pregnancy? If so, how could seek
understanding? (see Ps. 119:125, 143:8, see also Prov. 3:5)

Joseph received step by step guidance in dreams (Matt. 1:20, 2:13, 19, 22)

There is a comfort in having and accepting guidance from a loving Father (Isa. 26:3)

Why did the angel, refer to Joseph as the “Son of David”? (Matt. 1:20)

What do you think Joseph thought when the angel told him the child’s name was Jesus?
(Matt. 1:21) (What would you think/feel if God told you your newborn child would some day be
President of the United States?)

Joseph’s Song (by Michael Card)

Lord I know He’s not my own.

Not of my flesh, not of my bone.
Still Father, let this baby be
The Son of my love.

Father show me where I fit into this plan of Yours.

How can a man be father to the Son of God?
Lord, for all my life I’ve been a simple carpenter.
How can I raise a King?
How can I raise a King?
