Many local elections were decided in Shoshone County this Tuesday, and when the ballots were all counted it was found that several new faces would be populating the Valleys local government.

In Wallace, Scott Lasley, Joan Branstetter and Edwin Chase Sanborn each ran unopposed, and will be members of the city council for the next four years in positions one, three and five. In the election for city council position two, Daniel H. Hussey barely edged David G. DeRoos by eight votes to win the coveted position. Upon learning he had won, Hussey vowed to do his best by Wallace.

I just want to thank everyone who voted for me for their support, he said from Hawaii. Ill do my best to represent them on the council.

In Mullan, three men were running for just two city council seats. Incumbents Gary Garitone and Chuck Reitz were being challenged by newcomer Daniel White. Reitz took the most votes, with 130, but White was not far off, compiling 122 votes of his own, easily enough to overtake Garitones 81 earning him the position.

In Smelterville, both Tonia Cote and Dennie Fretheim won their unopposed city council races. In the mayoral race, a vacant position prior to this election, Larry Huber easily distanced himself from Bob Campbell, earning nearly triple the votes en route to his victory.

In Pinehurst, there were several races that needed to be cleared up. In the race for city council, three challengers came out to compete with incumbents Kevin Crawford and Vince Ross. Ross retained his seat, taking 141 votes the most in this race. Crawford wasnt far off with 102 votes, but Debbie Marek snuck in and topped him with 115 votes winning her the race for the second spot on the Pinehurst city council. Longtime mayor Jay Huber will retain his mayors seat topping Terry Smith in a tight race that could have saw either candidate come out on top.

In Kellogg, most eyes were trained on the seven percent resort tax that was being voted on, but Joan Head won her unopposed mayoral election, and Terry Douglas and Mark Aamodt each will possess seats on the city council for the next four years.

Osburn had the big electoral surprise of the year, as write-in candidate Kip McGillivray easily out-paced incumbent Robert McPhail in the

mayoral election easily topping him with 221 votes to 119 - and will serve as the citys new mayor. George Clapp and Liz Stanley each won their unopposed race for a four-year city council seat, and Brad Holmes ran unopposed for a two-year seat.

Finally, in Wardner, there were no surprises as all five city council candidates were running unopposed. Thomas Heston, Rhonda Kays and Stella Morgan each will fill positions for four-year terms, while Joseph Guardipee and Michael Heston will occupy two-year positions.
