History of the Act

IT Act is based on Model law on e-commerce adopted by UNCITRAL. India is 12th nation in the world to adopt cyber laws. Enacted on 17th May 2000.

Objectives of the IT Act

To provide legal recognition for transactions: Carried out by means of electronic data interchange, and other means of electronic communication, commonly referred to as "electronic commerce. To facilitate electronic filing of documents with Government agencies and E-Payments. To amend the Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act,1872, the Bankers Books Evidence Act 1891,Reserve Bank of India Act ,1934.

Specifics of the Act

Information technology Act 2000 consisted of 94 sections segregated into 13 chapters. In the 2008 version of the Act, there are 124 sections and 14 chapters. Sections I and II have been replaced. Sections III and IV are deleted.

Essence of the Act

Information Technology Act 2000 addressed the following issues: Legal Recognition of Electronic Documents. Legal Recognition of Digital Signatures. Offenses and Contraventions. Justice Dispensation Systems for Cybercrimes.

Various Forms Of Cyber Crime

Cyber Stalking :- Following and pursuing a person online. Spam :- Unsolicited sending of bulk email for commercial purposes. Fraud & Identity Theft :- Dishonest misrepresentation of fact intended to induce another to do or refrain from doing something which causes loss obscene or offensive content. Phising Scams :- Fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Cyber Terrorism :- An act of terrorism committed through the use of cyberspace or computer resources.
