RICHIANNE DALY-810005783 Credit Assignment #3

An additional facet of the policy to promote integrity in public life is establishing codes of conduct. Codes of conduct would delineate the correct behaviour of public officials. By establishing these codes of conduct, the Trinidad and Tobago government can endeavour to ensure the honourable and proper performance of public functions (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). A code of conduct establishes awareness of public officials as to the correct way in which to execute their duties. Also by defining proper conduct the clear identification of misconduct is facilitated, allowing for the process of accountability to be carried out with greater efficiency reducing incidences of misconduct and increasing the regulation of public officials . For example the code of conduct enshrined in the Integrity in Public Life Act of the Trinidad and Tobago Legislature states that no public official must make a decision in the execution of his office and at the same time know[s] that in the making of the decision, there is an opportunity to further his private interests or that of a member of his family or of any other person. (Government of Trinidad and Tobago) As such Senator Mary King was removed from her Ministerial position as a result of her awarding a contract to a family run company, Ixanos (Trinidad Express). The publics recognition of her wrongdoing was derived from her behaviour being clearly identified in public policy as a breach of the code of conduct.
