1. AASL Standard:

1.1.9 Collaborate with others to broaden and deepen understanding.


2. Target Audience:
(1) Third graders at a Title 1 Elementary School, approximately 8 years old.
(2) These children are in an EIP class, and most come Irom single parent households, or are raised by
other relatives. This school is predominately white, and most children receive Iree or reduced lunch.
inIormation obtained Irom the School Improvement Plan and interviews with the teacher oI the class.

graders with a variety oI academic challenges, including ADHD, poor CRCT scores in Math
and Reading. The students struggle with reading, and many are below grade level
(5) The students learn best when placed in groups and/or material is presented with some Iorm oI
technology.
(6) Attention: using variation during the video and asking questions. Relevance: explaining why
reading is important to each and every student and their Iuture. ConIidence: show students how building
reading skill over time, together, will help each oI them achieve reading goals. SatisIaction: Each student
will get to choose a book Ior the literature circle to read together, telling everyone why they chose the
book.

3. Objective:
(A) The 3

grade EIP class
(B) Student will collaborate to analyze literary works.
(C) Students will be presented with a video that illustrates how literature circles work and a skill-level
appropriate book approved by the teacher will be introduced.
(D) Students will achieve the Iollowing standards:
The student demonstrates the ability to read orally with speed, accuracy, and expression.
The student acquires and uses grade-level words to communicate effectively.
The student uses a variety of strategies to gain meaning from grade-level text.
