Red Blood Cells

What is another name for a red blood cell? What is the main function of red blood cells (RBCs)? The high partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs provides a rich environment for RBCs to pick up oxygen. What molecule, found within the RBC is responsible for binding oxygen? On the other hand, a low partial pressure for carbon dioxide in the lungs allows the same RBCs to unload oxygen they have carried back to the lungs from tissues throughout the body. What two things about RBCs are unique in the human body? Where are our RBCs formed? Consider a person receiving chemotherapy for cancer. If the production of red blood cells from bone marrow is interrupted, what might this mean for oxygen transport throughout the body? How would a decrease in circulating RBCs affect a persons energy level? How long to RBCs live? Is this a short or long time relative to other cells in the body?

What causes the red colour of these cells? What percentage of the oxygen transported in our blood is carried in our RBCs? Describe the concept of blood doping. Why would this give an athlete a potential edge in competition? Consider potential consequences. Why might this practice be dangerous (or even fatal)?
