Modern Model of the Atom Essay

The current model of the atom is the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom,

derived from the equations and calculations of Erwin Schrödinger. It describes an atom

as being comprised of protons and neutrons in its nucleus, and electrons that are likely

(90% probable) to be in certain regions, called energy levels.

Support for this model has come from many places. The first discovery that lead

to the development of the Quantum Mechanical Model was that of the electron by J.J.

Thomson, in the 1900’s. More information came from Ernest Rutherford, who proposed

the existence of the nucleus, backed up by his gold foil experiment. And lastly, Niels

Bohr
