Revision Guidelines 1. Do you have a title? Is it more than one word? Is it interesting?

Does it give insight to the position of the essay? 2. Underline your first sentence(s) in blue. Does it compel a readers attention? Write what type of lead line you used in the margin. Rate it 1-5. 3. Underline the last sentence of your introduction in red. Rate your thesis statement on a scale of 1-5. Does it answer the prompt? Does it take a position? 4. Is your introduction broad and general? Does it provide a context for the discussion? 5. Underline all topic sentences in purple. Do they make a claim and connect to the thesis statement? 6. Underline all conclusion sentences in green. Do they pull the paragraph together and explain/connect to thesis. 7. Count supporting sentences for every paragraph. Circle the number in the margin. Are your paragraphs well developed? Do they provide specific evidence to support your position? 8. Paragraphs need to follow the claim, support, explanation format. Did you save the best argument for last? Move the paragraphs. 9. Transitions- Transition between and within paragraphs. Circle and add. 10. Cross out I believeI think. 11. Circle all contractions/Change. 12. Scan your essay for RIP (rest in peace) words: really, a lot, very, stuff. Cross out every one and change. There are, there is Change and add powerful verbs.

13. Strong and varied sentence structure. Pick one body paragraph and count how long each sentence is in that paragraph. Have you combined any independent clauses with semi-colons? Do you always start with the subject? Try to add variety. 14. Is your conclusion broad and general? Does it provide the context of the discussion? 15. Underline the last sentence of your essay. Is it powerful? Does it leave a lasting impact? Does it call for action or change? Make necessary corrections for final draft.
